22 March – Ireland confirmed its first case^{[ dubious – discuss ]} of foot-and-mouth disease.^{[ citation needed ]}
7 June – Voters rejected the Treaty of Nice in a referendum.
9 September – The National Museum of Ireland's Museum of Country Life at Turlough, County Mayo, was officially opened.^[1]
14 September – Ireland held a national day of mourning following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. The Irish government cancelled all sports, public functions, and entertainment, and also closed schools, businesses, and shops. President Mary McAleese said that the events are "an attack on the very foundations of human dignity" and left the people of Ireland "sad, shocked, sickened, grieving, disbelieving, outraged, frightened all at once."^[2]
14 October – The first multiple state funeral was held in honour of ten Irish Republican Army volunteers who were executed by the British for their part in the War of Independence.
23 October – The Provisional Irish Republican Army commenced disarmament after peace talks.^[3]
4 November – The Police Service of Northern Ireland was established.
17 November – The Gaelic Athletic Association voted to abolish its controversial Rule 21 which previously prevented members of the British Army and the Police Service of Northern Ireland from playing Gaelic games.
14 December – Irish euro coins becomes available through the postal service, An Post, and at bank branches. These "starter packs" contained nineteen coins worth €6.35 and could be purchased for IR£5.

Gerald McCarthy is an Irish former hurling manager and player. In his playing career he was known for his intelligent anticipation, his ability to find open space and his overhead striking of the ball. A versatile player who lined out in no less than eight different positions, McCarthy made his name as an attacking midfielder and as a centre-forward. He is widely regarded to be one of the most skilful and stylish players of his generation and as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.

Daniel J. O'Grady, known as Dónal O'Grady, is an Irish former hurler and manager. At club level he was a dual player with St. Finbarr's, while he was also a member of the Cork senior hurling team.

Seán Condon was an Irish hurler and Gaelic footballer. At club level he played with St Finbarr's, while he was also a member of the Cork senior hurling team.

James Edward M. O'Brien, known as Teddy O'Brien, was an Irish former hurler and Gaelic footballer. At club level he played with Glen Rovers and St. Nicholas' and was also a member of the Cork senior teams as a dual player.

Christopher D. Ryan was an Irish Gaelic footballer, hurler and coach. As a dual player for club and county, he played in several positions including as a defensive centre-back, in midfield, or as a target man in attack. Ryan has been described as one of Cork's most decorated club players of all time.

Bertie O'Brien was an Irish hurler and Gaelic footballer. He played at club level with St. Finbarr's and was a dual player at various levels with Cork.

Billy Hennessy is an Irish hurler who plays as a left wing-back for club side St Finbarr's and at senior level with the Cork county team. He usually lines out as a left wing-back. He is the current captain of the St. Finbarr's premier senior hurling team. He captained St. Finbarr's to a Premier Senior hurling county final win in 2022.

Ethan Twomey is an Irish hurler. At club level he plays with St Finbarr's and at inter-county level with the Cork senior hurling team.
