The 1974 World Sportscar Championship season was the 22nd season of FIA World Sportscar Championship motor racing. It featured the 1974 World Championship for Makes [1] and FIA Cup for GT Cars [1] which were contested concurrently over a ten race series [1] from 25 April to 9 November 1974. The World Championship for Makes, which was open to Group 5 Sports Cars and Group 4 GT Cars, [2] was won by Matra [1] and the FIA Cup for GT Cars by Porsche. [1]

Points were awarded to the top 10 finishers in the order of 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1. [3] Makes were only awarded the applicable points for their highest finishing car, [3] with no points awarded for positions gained by additional cars. No points were awarded for places gained by Touring Cars [4] or by any other cars from groups which were ineligible for the championship.
Only the best seven scores for each make counted towards the championship, with any other points earned not included in the totals. [5]

The World Sportscar Championship was the world series run for sports car racing by the FIA from 1953 to 1992. The championship evolved from a small collection of the most important sportscar, endurance, and road racing events in Europe and North America with dozens of gentleman drivers at the grid to a professional racing series where the world's largest automakers spent millions of dollars per year.
The 1974 24 Hours of Le Mans was the 42nd Grand Prix of Endurance, and took place on 15 and 16 June 1974. It was the fifth round of the 1974 World Championship for Makes. After Alfa Romeo had won the first race of the season at Monza, it had been Matra all the way and they came to Le Mans as firm favourites for a third consecutive outright victory, especially after Alfa Romeo withdrew its cars just before raceweek.

The former was contested by Group 6 Sports Prototypes, Group 4 Sports Cars and Group 3 Grand Touring Cars and the later by Group 3 Grand Touring Cars only. The two titles were decided over a ten race series which ran from 3 February 1968 to 29 September 1968, but one race was only worth half points, and only the five best results were counted.

The Ferrari 312 PB was a Group 6 Prototype-Sports Car introduced in 1971 by Italian carmaker Ferrari. It was officially designated the 312 P, but often known as the 312 PB to avoid confusion with a previous car of the same name.
