Opened to the campus community in 1991, Hartley House is named in honor of Barbara Baker Hartley, an educator and 1946 alumna of Whittier College.
A member of Delta Phi Upsilon and the Metaphonian Society, Baker remained involved with the College throughout her life, participating in both the John Greenleaf Whittier Society and Philadelphia Society, and providing a generous endowment in support of the faculty-in-residence program.
Hartley House is a two-story, Mediterranean-revival structure located on the south-eastern side of campus at the top of Earlham Drive, across from Graham Athletic Center and its adjacent Ettinger Tennis Courts.
The Hartley House Hub for Integrative and Applied Learning in Social Justice
Professor of Sociology and Environmental Studies Becky Overmyer-Velázquez and her wife Pamela Nishikawa, along with their daughters Amara and Zoe, took residence of Hartley House in fall 2021.
Becky’s work as a community organizer and the president of a grassroots environmental justice non-profit organization has been an invaluable education in action for social change that she brings to Hartley House. The “Hartley Hub” is a place to establish and sustain professional relationships for social justice between the College and the greater Los Angeles region. These are opportunities for networking and knowledge exchange that include students and faculty in all divisions because “Jobs for Justice” are everywhere and in all fields.
“I’m especially excited about providing opportunities for students to tap into their passions and to learn how to make a positive difference in the world while following their passion,” says Overmyer-Velázquez. “The Hartley Hub is a home for everyone who wants to make their education meaningful and live with purpose in the world.”
