We're excited to finally release the results of the Size & Health of the UK Space Industry 2023 study for the UK Space Agency! 🚀

The Size and Health survey 2023 is now published, demonstrating how the UK space industry becomes more important every day as an engine of national economic growth and innovation. Our productivity rates are 2.3 times the national average and over £360bn of GDP is underpinned by space derived services. A single day without space would cost over £1bn, so let’s protect one of our most precious domains. #ThanksSpace See the full report: https://lnkd.in/eu_UKsUA #SizeandHealth

The scale and depth of know-how on display at trade shows like the Farnborough International is always astounding. There are representatives from thousands of companies covering the full value chain, at various stages of maturity, and across all continents. The scale and diversity of the supply-chain is the result of a decades-old outsourcing model. Large primes like Airbus Defence and Space and Thales Alenia Space sit at the top as system integrators and others slot in as subsystem and component suppliers who are chosen to optimise the cost, schedule, and performance requirements of different space missions. ESA's georeturn policy has gifted Europe a resilient supply-chain with duplicate capabilities across Member States, but it comes at the cost of efficiency and vulnerability to market weakness. The last decade has seen a challenge to this old model. Disruptors like SpaceX, Project Kuiper, and Terran Orbital Corporation have opted for vertical integration as a conscious business model and response to new technologies (3D printing) and build philosophies (e.g. system-level as opposed to spacecraft level redundancy). In other cases it has been forced on pre-revenue companies trying to absorb the huge sums of cash that were raised when capital was cheap and investors less scrutinous. Either way, this model suggests a smaller and less geographically concentrated supply-chain. My point is this: the success of the new wave of industry disruptors will not be limited to the boardrooms of the industry's legacy operators. It will extend across the supply-chain of their suppliers and drive a new wave of mergers, consolidation, and exits further upstream. National government's and agencies like ESA will have to think long and hard about the role that their procurement for space missions can play in mitigating the atrophy of the space industrial base.
