This week, we’re diving into the cellular complexity of our 3D-bioprinted models compared to traditional tumour organoids 👇 ✖ Current tumour organoid models are limited in cellular diversity, often incorporating only a few cell types that fail to replicate the tumour microenvironment (TME)—the unique environment surrounding tumours that plays a crucial role in their development. This inability to mimic the full range of cell types present in human tumours diminishes their effectiveness as tools for drug screening in cancer research. ✔ In contrast, Carcinotech’s 3D-bioprinted tumours consist of over 20 donor-derived cell types, accurately mirroring native tumour biology and its intricate ecosystem. Cancer Research UK (CRUK), alongside the Minderoo Foundation, has awarded £3m to test new treatments for people with brain cancer. The money will be used to fund a world-first trial to transform glioblastoma treatment using adaptive, genomically guided therapies. This innovative study personalises treatments based on each patient’s unique cancer DNA, aiming to bring faster, more effective options to those living with brain cancer. The platform's real-time, flexible approach adjusts treatments as new data emerges, increasing the likelihood of finding a treatment plan that will work best for the patient, offering new hope for improved patient outcomes in this hard-to-treat cancer. A recent study published in Nature reveals a fascinating discovery about how breast cancer tumours exploit sensory nerves to fuel metastasis. While it's known that nerve contact can promote tumour growth, researchers at The Rockefeller University found that breast tumours trigger a different, contact-independent process. The study, led by Veena Padmanaban, uncovered that blood vessels within tumours release molecules that draw sensory nerves closer. This proximity activates genes in cancer cells that promote their spread, without the cells needing to directly touch the nerves. 💡 Understanding this new pathway opens doors for potential therapeutic strategies to interrupt cancer spread.
