Language support

Hi, Gerard. I saw what you wrote on Bosnian Wikipedia about language support. I am professor of Bosnian language and literature (but I am also good in English :-), and, of course, in Croatian, Serbian and Montenegrin) and I am also one of the admins on BS Wiki (Kukac). Could you explain me this language support with more details? What kind of information does the language support team need? Maybe I can help in terms of language questions. But software testing is something different. :-) I'll pass on that. :-) Thanks. -- 62.113.4.227 14:15, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

What linguists can do in a language support team

At translatewiki.net, we support the localisation and the internationalisation for many software applications. What we have learned is that practically every application needs particular facts and when supporting particular languages there are issues that could be supported in standards when these standards contain the necessary information.

Many of the issues are so simple that anyone with an advanced knowledge of a language can answer the questions; what is the autonym, how do you write a number, how do you sort a list of words. Others are a bit more difficult like do people have adequate fonts to read their language or is it easy for people to enter texts from a keyboard.

By looking for knowledgeable people who can support their language and by concentrating on standards and fonts and keyboard methods, the use of gender, plural. We seek to improve the content of standards and after some delay we will be implementing those standards. Providing a best practice that makes a difference to any and all.

For people who support an application by working on its localisation; we work hard to make translatewiki.net as good as we can. We actively share our knowledge with other freely licensed applications. People who localise are the real heroes; their work is the most effective usability improvement available to anyone who does not know the original language of an application. Even English readers benefit; in order to localise a text, the text has to be understandable.

So yes, you are not only welcome, you are very much needed. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 15:05, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Gerard, Thanks for adding Wikimedia on my babel. But I am sorry, my question: why I get it? I just curious. Thanks.

J Subhi pemandiran23:25, 1 July 2010

Because you translate messages that are part of the MediaWiki software. It also puts you into a category so that it is possible for people to address people who work on MediaWiki messages.

GerardM04:17, 2 July 2010

Okay, thank GerardM

Thank you GerardM for adding babel to my user page via the new mw:Extension:Babel. For backward compatibility, would it make sense to have a Template:Babel wrapper for it? Thanks again!

Zazaki translations

Lieber GerardM!

Mirzali (talk)10:04, 21 June 2012

Dear GerardM! There is an enormous change war and vandalism by Kumkumuk. He is a sock puppet of Erdemaslancan. He is not a native speaker. He does it purely out of malice. Can someone please stop him? He needs to be locked. Instead of him previously Mirzali was blocked by Nemo_bis. And his blocking must be canceled. Best regards!

Pywikipedia

Hello, The messages that aren't translated in Kurdish appear in Turkish on ku.wikipedia (exemple). Messages that aren't translated in Kurdish must be in English. What should I do to fix this problem. Thank you in advance.

Ghybu (talk)17:02, 13 July 2013

It's best to just translate everything in your language. If you think that software is not behaving as it should, mw:Manual:Pywikipediabot/Development describes how to report an issue.

How do you know that already translated projects are actually used by users, such as Tagalog users using projects in Tagalog language?

Hoi, you are a translator, the whole message needs to be localised. Not just the name of the language. Thanks,

GerardM (talk)05:26, 18 May 2012

It was the case in the two discussions.

Transfer of translatewiki.net rally fund

Hi, I participated in the translatewiki.net rally taken place in December. I got an email from you indicating me to provide my paypal or banking details as I've completed 500 translation which was a target and I won. I've given all the information and also sent two replies, but till yet I didn't get any response from you in the email or in anywwhere .

Jnanaranjan Sahu (talk)19:40, 6 April 2012

Hoi, The payment was made. I send you proof in the format of a screenshot of the paypal payment history. Thanks,

GerardM (talk)07:38, 7 April 2012

Sorry but I didn't get anything neither the money nor any proof ? where did you sent the proof ?

Jnanaranjan Sahu (talk)08:40, 8 April 2012

I saw the e-mail Gerard sent.

Hi Gerard, I followed you request to help on translations to Palatine (German too, if there's need for). To be helpful I need translation rights which I already applied for. Thank you.

Your mesage at mk.wikipedia

Before few days you coment on mk.wikipedia, here, but the given URL link, "Gerrit document", is not functional. Can you specify where exactly there is a request to change the names of MediaWiki namespaces for the Macedonian language.

brest (talk)15:22, 26 March 2012

There changes are here: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#change,3318

Please let us know if there is something problematic in them as soon as possible.

Nike (talk)15:27, 26 March 2012

I see, the request is change from 'Медија' to 'Медиум' in $namespaceNames and in $namespaceAliases. I think that there is no need for changes. According to Help:Namespaces the proper Macedonian word is 'Медија'.

brest (talk)15:45, 26 March 2012

The help page reflects what MediaWiki uses, not the other way around. Please indicate clearly whether you want to block this change or not (preferably with community discussion).

Nike (talk)10:05, 27 March 2012

There is no need for changes, I want to block this change.

Hello Gerard, You have got a mail on 12th March.

-- ɑηsuмaη ʈ ᶏ ɭ Ϟ05:49, 16 March 2012

Payment still not received

Hi, I hate to raise the issue, but a year and half after the rally I haven't received my cut.

Turin21:08, 1 July 2011

I have asked GerardM to take a look at it. I assume he will reply back here at least.

Siebrand14:02, 2 August 2011

Yeah, well -- nobody contacted me.

Two years later you have all my needed details and I have no payment at all. But I keep receiving newsletters for more and new translation rallies.

I've been translating free software for years for free, but this here is diferent. Once you promise you'll pay you have to keep that promise. That's how I see things and since now it's been a disapointing (and a little bit insulting too) experience working with you.

So please make things right. You have my payment details.

Turin (talk)16:28, 24 December 2011

I've moved the topic to GerardM's talk page. I'm sure he *will* look into it this time. Thanks for reminding us again.

Siebrand23:53, 24 December 2011

Hoi, I did email Turin directly. I do not have such info.

GerardM (talk)20:30, 26 December 2011

And I've replied you right away. Did you receive my letter?
