E.P. Clapp Distinguished Professor of Politics, Occidental College

Peter Dreier is the E.P. Clapp Distinguished Professor of Politics at Occidental College and he is the founding chair of the school's Urban & Environmental Policy Department.

He has a BA in journalism from Syracuse University (1970). He's been a community organizer, newspaper reporter and government official (deputy to Boston Mayor Ray Flynn) and has taught at Occidental College since 1993.

He has published op-eds in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, and other papers, and he has published articles for The Nation, American Prospect, Teen Vogue, Dissent, The New Republic, and The Daily Beast, among others.

He has written or edited seven books, including "The 100 Greatest Americans of the 20th Century: A Social Justice Hall of Fame" (2012), "We Own the Future: Democratic Socialism, American Style" (2020), "Place Matters; Metropolitics for the 21st Century" (2014, third edition), and two books about baseball (co-authored with Rob Elias) that were published in April 2022: "Baseball Rebels: The People, Players and Social Movements That Shook Up the Game and Changed America" and "Major League Rebels: Baseball Battles Over Workers Rights and American Empire."
