Associate Investigator, ARC Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage, UNSW Sydney

Alan is well established in academia, affiliated with multiple universities and a Senior Honorary Lecturer at BEES, UNSW. He is widely published, with some 40 articles on past Aboriginal demography, palaeoclimatology and other key archaeological debates in journals such as Nature Communications, Proceedings of the Royal Society Series B, Journal of Archaeological Science, and Australian Archaeology.

His work significantly advances the exploitation of radiocarbon dates as a mainstream and reliable proxy for exploring hunter-gatherer behaviour in Australia; and provides a number of future directions for both time-series analysis and Australian research more generally. Globally, the analyses undertaken remain at the forefront of the technique, and are routinely used, applied and critiqued across the world.

Alan is an associate director and national technical leader, Aboriginal heritage at EMM Consulting Pty Ltd, an Australian, employee-owned, multi-disciplinary planning and environment consultancy company. Through his current and previous roles extending over two decades, Alan has become one of the leading archaeological consultants in the Sydney basin, and has undertaken work in every Australian State and Territory. As part of this role, he routinely supervises large-scale archaeological excavations across Australia, especially in the Sydney Basin, and is well-known for his knowledge and experience in the investigation of archaeological deposits in deep sand bodies
