Suspected sockpuppet on loose

[edit]

Thanks for reverting anon's comments out of my talk page. I suggest you to give your comments on Wikispecies:Village Pump#Attention needed (possibility of sockpuppet) regarding those anons' activities. OhanaUnitedTalk page 00:51, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps a bot?

[edit]

Great work at using Twinkle to delete orphaned talk page. Do you want to create a "bot" account just for removing these pages? It can reduce all the cluttering on the RC page if it has a bot flag. OhanaUnitedTalk page 00:17, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, I could instead have a +crat bit to temporarily flag this account if I need to run the adminbot again. Maxim(talk) 21:09, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Maxim

[edit]

Hey Maxim, I was wondering if you could help me out on this project. It would be nice if you somehow "adopted" me, so I can ask you for help. Thank you. --Kanonkas 16:16, 4 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I really only hang out here for vandal/newpage patrol, and I'm not always available. OhanaUnited, though is. I suggest you have him bear the brunt of your questioning. :-p Maxim(talk) 00:24, 5 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Renaming users

[edit]

Here's your chance to shine. In here, Dave wants to change the username to DaRe. I have contacted DaRe and he wants to rename DaRe to Dave. It seems like they want to swap each other's username. Is that possible to do? (You might as well do the rename as I'm not a big fan of renaming users) OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:21, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nonsense page

[edit]

What do you understand under nonsense page. There are a lot of pages in Wikipedia that are nonsense pages. Every day there are newcomers who fill the pages with nonsense. They are amateurs and no professionals.

Regards,

PeterR 17:27, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

An editor created a new page full of nonsense. There was no other revisions to it. Hopefully this answers your question...?

Thanks...

Also thanks for deleting that vandalism I had marked with {{delete}}. As I now request amdinistratorship, would you please update MediaWiki:Recentchangestext (changing "None" after "Adminship:" to "1" or something like that)? With kindest regards, Calandrella 19:10, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image problem

[edit]

I can't seem to get the image I put up for Dipentium zelandicum to show my most recent version of it, though it shows the most recent version if you click on it. Can you fix that? 130.216.1.16 22:44, 8 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, it works for me; maybe it's a caching issue-. To purge your cache, click CTRL-F5 in Explorer, CTRL-SHIFT-R in Firefox, or append ?action=purge to the url. Maxim(talk) 13:37, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: admin?

[edit]

I have created a login stho002 What are the benefits of being an admin? Is there an instructions page? Stho002 01:31, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK, so what do I need to do now to become an admin? Also, I quite like the idea of having pages for localities (maybe just countries) on which one could list their biota as links to the species pages. Has anybody thought of this? Would anyone object? 130.216.1.16 02:02, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Don't forget to answer my other question (above). So what's your speciality? Where is the world are you? Just curious ...
So, what's the attraction of being a vandal whacker? I take it you are not a volunteer, then???
Heck! What happened? Were you too short to qualify for the police force or something???? Just kidding! :) 130.216.1.16 02:50, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Max

[edit]

Nice to write you that more than 100 organisations from over 40 countries in 6 continents are now involved at the present time, the CBOL database (http://www.barcodinglife.org) has 508,790 records representing 49,688 species, a small proportion of the total biodiversity on earth, but a remarkable achievement for the first four years of its existence. i will do my best if i can help you --Eurobas 22:23, 15 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Maxim, when you nominated me, you put >Ends 02:16, 20 November 2008 (UTC). Now that date is past, and there are more "yays than nays", so where do things stand??? Stho002 21:34, 22 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I asked Anonymous Dissident, a bureaucrat, to take a look at it.--Maxim(talk) 17:07, 23 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Warning template?

[edit]

Hey Max, is there a template for warning vandals??? Stho002 20:05, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Use {{Test}}, {{Test1}}, {{Test2}}; but don't be afraid to block on sight for blatant vandals; creating a test page merits a warning, and if they persist, block.--Maxim(talk) 23:50, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

About User:Cometstyles

[edit]

While I don't object you promoting Cometstyles to sysop & crat, I think it's a wise decision to send it through RfA/RfB post-promotion just so that the community doesn't view this as unilateral action. OhanaUnitedTalk page 02:28, 26 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

URGENT PROBLEM

[edit]

My continued ability to contribute to Wikispecies depends crucially on being able to protect just one page, called 'New Zealand', which is a faunistic page with links to (unprotected) pages on New Zealand taxa. My "friend" Lycaon keeps unprotecting it! I believe that such faunistic pages are well within the spirit and ideology of Wikispecies, and perhaps a new category ought to be created to accommodate them. However, I need to protect my New Zealand page for the following reasons: (1) in line with the Wikispecies philosophy, I am contributing this information for free, and there are potential conflicts of interest with other people/institutions here in N.Z. who are trying to extract as much funding as possible for similar projects; (2) if the page is open edit, it could very easily deteriorate into chaos, as what is needed is a single consistent view on the fauna. The classification isn't totally "objective", so other people may try to impose their own conflicting opinions and the result could be chaotic. Can the beauracrats please have a vote on this? Regrettably, if I cannot protect this one single page, I will have to leave Wikispecies...
Sincerely,
Stephen Thorpe
Stho002 21:19, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
PS: Other editors can still create their own versions of my 'New Zealand' page, expressing their own opinions, and they can give the pages disambiguated names, e.g. New Zealand, and link them to the appropriate taxa pages independently of me. Hence I am not trying to prevent alternative opinions, I am just trying to prevent alternative opinions from making my page into an unusable mess of conflicting opinions.
Stho002 22:44, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

It isn't quite that simple. I am thinking more about the long-term, rather than just me looking out for vandals. Besides, vandalism isn't the big issue, it is consistency: as I said, taxonomy is never completely objective, people will trust my opinion on New Zealand beetles etc., but if others start to add things according to their opinions, it will get messy. But other people can still express their opinions by creating alternative 'New Zealand' pages if they want to. I am not preventing others from expressing their opinions, just preventing them from fiddling with mine. So, it all comes down to this: do I have the right to protect the integrity of one single page - a page that wouldn't have existed anyway if I hadn't created it? I believe that what I am doing preserves the spirit of what Wikispecies is intended for, but without this there is no way to ensure reliability of information, so no "serious biologist" will be able to take us seriously...

Stho002 00:46, 28 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure that we entirely understand each other. Are you suggesting that there is someone with power over Wikispecies I should discuss this with? The "Wrong version" page you quoted is a bit silly in its wording in places, and I'm not sure what I am supposed to think about it! Secondly, yes I know it is a Wiki that everyone can edit, which is why I am not trying to protect any of the standard taxon pages. I am just trying to protect one page which wouldn't otherwise have existed if I hadn't created it. As I said, NO SERIOUS BIOLOGIST CAN EVER TAKE WIKISPECIES SERIOUSLY IF THEY CANT GET RELIABLE INFORMATION. I believe that protecting this one page allows people to get some consistent/reliable information while at the same time allowing anybody else to create another version of the same page, which from their point of view is as good as being able to edit my page. It is an issue which is worth thinking about...

Stho002 01:29, 28 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks a bunch Maxim - I was just writing to you to explain what I had done when you blocked me! Look, maybe I ought to have discussed the whole thing with other admins first, but it just makes so much sense I just didn't anticipate that any admin would possibly object to my protecting a single page that was created by me. Pages like this make Wikispecies potentially very powerful, and are in my opinion completely within the spirit of what Wikispecies is all about. I aplogise, but I haven't done all this work on Wikispecies without a reason, and the New Zealand page was VERY important to me... :(

Stho002 02:56, 28 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Not an excuss for both wheelwarring THEN blocking an admin you're in conflict. Absolutely ridiculous.--Maxim(talk) 02:58, 28 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I repeatedly asked Lycaon to maintain the status quo until the matter could be discussed by all, but he went "unilateral" against me, a fellow admin, and started making incorrect negative assertions about "personal research" etc. My attempt to block him for harrassment was just a gesture - I knew he would get out of it easily enough. How very ironic that my attempts to contribute something solid and reliable to Wikispecies have met such fierce opposition from within - such fragile egos ...

There is presently a discussion on the use of daggers to denote extinct taxa. This will affect a large portion of the pages in wikispecies as the project grows so if possible please read the contributions so far and comment. Thanks --Kevmin 07:02, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Category

[edit]

Hello,

Is there a reason that nothing here gets a category? I would believe that cats makes it easer to sort stuff or am I wrong?

Best regards, Abigor talk 22:35, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've noticed that too, but since Wikispecies is a directory of a species, I think a search will suffice. I don't see much of a point to categorize every species. The categories will have little use IMHO. Maxim(talk)

Vandalism from Cheesecracker

[edit]

Hi, I'm leaving this message on the talkpage of several of the Wikispecies admins. I will also put this message on your Wikipedia page. User:Cheesecracker has spent an hour and a half running riot through Wikispecies. I couldn't find an admin urgently so requested help from the Stewards. A two hour block has been placed while cleanup occurs. Can an indefinite block please be used? Beeswaxcandle 08:21, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I reblocked the user indefinitely, and undid their vandalism. (I'm one of the stewards who responded to Beeswaxcandle's request.) —Pathoschild 08:25:23, 02 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't know which template you means.

Arctiidae is now Arctiinae and a subfamily from Noctuidae. You can allso delete Arctiidae

Village Pump vandalism

[edit]

I hope you can fix Wikispecies:Village pump/Archive 04032005 as soon as possible, which Cometstyles said you will handle it. Leaving things around like this is a sign telling vandals that their vandalism works and successfully disrupts the project, so we better fix the broken windows quickly. OhanaUnitedTalk page 15:11, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oops, I totally forgot about this. I've fixed it now, took me 10 minutes and a bot flag to avoid flooding. :-) Maxim(talk) 00:05, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

"Templates" at navigation toolbar

[edit]

Hello. In Wikispecies, MediaWiki:Currentevents is used for navigation to templates. But two hundreds languages except English are still "Recent events" in each language because its translation subpages are not created in this wiki. Would you edit MediaWiki:Sidebar and change "** currentevents-url|currentevents" to "** Wikispecies:Templates|Templates", or make translation subpages in major languages? --Hisagi 13:18, 13 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

201.6.111.159

[edit]

Something funny is going on with 201.6.111.159 (who you just blocked). I didn't block the IP because they blanked 2 pages which were created by, and then restored, by J.delanoy within 60 seconds of them being blanked each time! Remove Autoblock

[edit]

I mistakenly blocked David0811, thinking for a minute he was a vandal, and then unblocked him, but apparently I need to remove Autoblock, but how do I do this? Stho002 21:54, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't think you need to. Once you remove a block, it lifts all block conditions (I believe...) OhanaUnitedTalk page 02:40, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I did it for you. :p It actually doesn't, if you enable the autoblock, go to Special:IPBlockList, then you'll see a autoblock number, which next to it, will say "Automatically blocked because your IP address has been used by USER". You then removed this block, which is the autoblock. Maxim(talk) 10:08, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Species lists

[edit]

Maybe you can help out here so I don't make any mistake. On a genus page, such as Hydrangea, there is a list of species. Should this list be accepted species or published taxa? When I write about a species some taxa from the species list will be listed as a synonym of another species, should I remove the name from the species list of the genus-page?

I can answer that. The pages should be for accepted taxa with redirects to the accepted name page created for synonyms. If there are synonyms in the species list then by all means make them redirects to the proper name and remove them from the genus page. Hope that clarifies you question. --Kevmin 20:58, 6 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
