Kodos Johnson is a Rigellian from Rigel 7. They are married to Kang. Together, Kang and Kodos try to take over Earth and are usually seen attacking Springfield.

Description

Kang and Kodos have a lot of space weaponry at hand and have their own spaceship. They speak the Rigellian language, which, by coincidence, is identical to English. Although they look identical, Kang has a deeper voice than Kodos.

History

Either Kang or Kodos was seen in a lineup of other aliens, along with Marvin the Martian, Gort, Chewbacca and ALF, when Homer was called upon to identify the alien he had seen in the woods.[1]

Non-canon

Kang and Kodos once came to Earth and interrupted a roast of Homer Simpson. They initially threatened to destroy Earth, but relented after they found out that all their favorite celebrities lived there. Kang and Kodos agreed to spare the planet in exchange for being granted admission to other awards shows.[2]

Kang and Kodos once impersonated Bill Clinton and Bob Dole respectively in order to become elected President of the United States. When they were revealed to be aliens, they were still more popular than a third party.[3]

Kang and Kodos have both ruled over Springfield until they were found out to not be welcome and fled from their primitive weapons.[4]

Trivia

  • In the PS2 game, The Simpsons: Hit & Run, Kodos works with Kang to make an Intergalactic reality show in Springfield, Foolish Earthlings and is killed in the production due to the actions of Homer's plans of using nuclear waste to destroy the UFO.

Behind the Laughter

The idea of Kang and Kodos came from Jay Kogen and Wallace Wolodarsky.[5] Kang and Kodos' designs were based off a cover of an EC Comics issue.[6] They were originally designed to be constantly drooling; however, Matt Groening decided against this to make the animation process easier. However, the animators didn't mind so the drooling stayed in.[7] The names of Kang and Kodos come from two Star Trek characters. Kang is named after a Klingon captain from the episode "Day of the Dove" and Kodos is named after Kodos the Executioner from the episode "The Conscience of the King".[6]

The gender of both Kang and Kodos is disputed since it has been different in many different episodes and comics. Kodos was referred to as female in "Treehouse of Horror XVII" and male in "Treehouse of Horror XVIII". Also, Kodos mentioned his/her "700 balls" in "Treehouse of Horror XVIII". In the comic stories Cooking with Kang and Kodos and Otto-Mat, Kodos is referred to as being female. In "Simpsorama", Kang and Kodos were referred to as both female and were married. The Simpsons: Tapped Out also has Kang and Kodos in the female characters group.
