Sorry, I know almost no Russian. But я знаю the Russian alphabet.
Peirce's name is pronounced more like "Прс" than like "Пирс".
- Прс is not word and sound like command "stop" for horses. --exlex 03:02, 23 октября 2007 (UTC)
- I didn't say that Прс is a word. I'm just saying that the pronunciation of Peirce's name is exactly that of the English-language word "purse" and not that of the English-language word "pierce." Some people whose name is "Peirce" pronounce the name like "pierce," but that's the wrong pronunciation in the case of C.S. Peirce. English is a weird language. If "Прс" just sounds too weird in Russian, then still "Пэрс" or "Пырс" would be closer to "Peirce." As you would render the sound of the English-language word "purse." If "Пирс" is already established by tradition as the Russian rendering of Peirce's name, then I guess it's too late to change it, but it's still good to know the correct original pronunciation. 74.72.220.233 11:50, 23 октября 2007 (UTC)The Tetrast
Here's how the Bulgarian Wiki spells it: "Пърс", that seems closer. 74.72.220.233 12:51, 23 октября 2007 (UTC)
- For pronuciation IPA. прс is worse that пирс --exlex 13:48, 23 октября 2007 (UTC)
I had thought the Russian "р" can be like a vowel.
The only problem with the IPA is that almost nobody knows it. If you had to spell the English word "purse" phonetically for a Russian, how would you do it? That's how to represent the pronunciation of "Peirce".
Here's a source from The Peirce Edition Project http://www.iupui.edu/~peirce/news/1_3/13_4.htm#pronunciation :
Note on the Pronounciation of "Peirce"
In an 1880 note for Frederick C. Peirce's genealogy of the Peirce family, James Mills Peirce (Charles' brother) discussed the pronunciation of the family name:
"In the old pronunciation of the name, according to the tradition prevalent in several branches of the family of John of Watertown [John Pers, a weaver from Norwich who emigrated in 1637], the vowel-sound was the same that we now hear in the words "pear," "heir" and "their"; and this pronunciation is remembered by living persons as having been sometimes used by old-fashioned people. This was probably quite independent of the spelling. The same sound was, according to A. J. Ellis, used in the verb to pierce, in the 17th century, and by some in the 18th century. On the other hand, the verb may be occasionally heard with the pronunciation "perce" (or "purse"), which is now the prevalent pronunciation of all forms of the surname in the neighborhood of Boston."

Мало информации
[править код]Предлагаю добавить в статью больше информации по кругу философских и логических интересов Пирса, отразить зотя бы вкратце его идеи, ту же фанероскопию. Пирс этого заслуживает. 84.18.120.145 12:58, 17 марта 2018 (UTC)
