27, March 2017. Steller Watch Lets Anyone With Internet Access Play Wildlife Biologist. In an effort to figure out what’s behind the mysterious decline of Steller sea lions, scientists are trying out crowdsourcing for the first time. The project is called Steller Watch. The idea is to convince the public to comb through pictures looking for sea lions.
Biodiversity needs citizen scientists. Citizen scientists are already providing large amounts of data for monitoring biodiversity, but they could do much more, according to a new study published in the journal Biological Conservation, which suggests that citizen science has the potential to contribute much more to regional and global assessments of biodiversity. Citizen scientists are regular people who provide data or input to science, for example by monitoring species in their community or examining satellite imagery for evidence of deforestation or land use change.
Citizen scientists give NPS 100,000+ biodiversity records for 100th birthday
Expanding citizen science models to enhance open innovation. Over the years,
citizen scientists have provided vital data and contributed in invaluable ways
to various scientific quests. But they’re typically relegated to helping
traditional scientists complete tasks the pros don’t have the time or resources
to deal with on their own. Citizens are asked to count wildlife, for instance,
or classify photos that are of interest to the lead researchers.

27, March 2017. Citizen science can improve conservation science, natural resource management, and environmental protection. DOI:10.1016/j.biocon.2016.05.015. Citizen science has advanced science for hundreds of years, contributed to many peer-reviewed articles, and informed land management decisions and policies across the United States. Over the last 10 years, citizen science has grown immensely in the United States and many other countries.

Project Noah. Project Noah is an award-winning software platform designed to help people reconnect with the natural world. Launched out of NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program in early 2010, the project began as an experiment to mobilize citizen scientists and build a digital butterfly net for the 21st century. Backed by National Geographic, Project Noah is mobilizing a new generation of nature explorers and helping people from around the world appreciate their local wildlife.
