Former Queensbury standout Kyle Ball is shown in action with the CP Dynamo 18U AAA ice hockey team during a game last season.
Queensbury’s Kyle Ball may be finished with high school, but he will play one more season of travel hockey with CP Dynamo when hockey starts back up in August.
It will be the final year of youth hockey before he has to choose a junior hockey team to play with.
Ball chose to play for the Clifton Park-based Dynamo for the last four seasons rather than with the Queensbury Spartans, his high school team.
“Playing for the Dynamo just felt like a better opportunity, it gave me a better opportunity to play at a higher level eventually in college,” said Ball, who graduated from Queensbury High School last week. “The Dynamo are just a higher level of hockey and I get to play against some of the best players in the country. A lot of kids in high school do it more as a fun sport, and with the Dynamo, kids are dedicated and want to play hockey in the future.”

Ball
Ball, 18, had his best season last year with the CP Dynamo 18U AAA team, finishing with nine goals and 14 assists for 23 points — a career high in goals for the normally “defensive defenseman.”
“I have always known that as a defensive defenseman I need to focus on defense, but recently I got more offensive,” said Ball, a 6-foot-1, 200-pounder. “Working on shooting the puck more, joining the rush. Nine goals isn’t too many goals, but definitely an improvement from previous years.”

Kyle Ball stands at the top of the awards stand at the 2023 state track and field championships at Middletown High School after winning the boys Division I discus competition.
Ball was also a state champion in track and field, winning the Division I boys title in discus as a junior in 2023 with a throw of 164 feet, 9 inches, and placing second in the Federation. Last month, he finished fifth in the state in D-I, but competed in the New Balance Nationals a week later at the University of Pennsylvania and threw a personal-best 179-3 to place ninth overall.
Although a second sport for Ball, he feels a deep connection to throwing the discus.
“At Nationals this season I finished with a PR (personal record) of 179 — it was really fun to get to do it one final time,” Ball said. “Although it is my second sport, I put a lot of time into it. I get to share that with my dad, my brother and my grandfather, who all threw in high school.”
Ball credits some of his hockey skills to everything that he has learned while competing in track and field.
“The discipline of having to show up at practice every day, you can have bad practice and still just work at it over and over again until you get it right and perfect it,” he said. “Also the rotational power of throwing. It helps build up my core. The release of a discus is very similar to how you would release the puck, when you are rotating your body.”
In his final season with the CP Dynamo, Ball has a few skills he wants to hone in on for the next level of hockey.
“One thing I am trying to work on is my speed, and my conditioning,” Ball said. “I want to show teams that I am a competitor and physical. I want to show teams I am tough and willing to fight, show that I will stand up for my teammates.”
When it comes to looking for a junior team, Ball doesn’t have a preference — just a spot he can compete at the highest level possible.
“I would go anywhere,” he said. “I just want to play in the best place for me with the best competition possible.”
