E. H.ASHCROFT, 0F LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS. Lenen Patent No. 67,478, daad August 6, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-CYLINDER LUBRIGTORS..
@lo Stlgehult reime tn in thm gtctts'rs ntent mit making partiti 111e' stun.
To ALL wHoM A1T MAY ooNoERN:
Be it known that I, E. H. ASHCROFT, of Lynn, in the county of Essex, and Stwe of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators for Locomotive Cylinders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Y Figure 1 is an elevation of'my improved lubricator.
-Fi'gure 2 is a vertical section of the. same; and
Figure 3 is a similar view of my lubricator in a modified form, the casing F being removed.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a lubricator for locomotive or other steam cylinders, thatthe oiluorwtallow in 'ybe fed tothe same automatically when there is no steam in the cylinder, as when the locomotive is approaching a statiown', goingifdowln gradefetc., no oil or tallow being required when steam is allowed to enter the cylinder, as it will lubricate the parts.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings, A is the cup for containing the oil or tallow, and is' provided with a cover,`B.V C is a tube secured in the cup A, and carries the valve-rod arid valve D, which regulate the flow of oil to the cylinder. '.lhs tube C is perforated with holes at the top and bottom, the perforations at the bottom-serving to allow the lubricating material to enter the tube C, while those at the top are for the purpose of allowi'ng any steam which may enter said tubo from thecylinder to escape. E is a valve, which is shut by the pressure of steam when the same is allowed to enter the cylinder, and is opened when the 'supply is cut off. The space G, shown in iig. 2, formed by the cup A and casing F, is for the purpose of containing steam from the cylinder to melt the tallow in cup A. I
The operation is as follows: requisite quantity of tallow or otherlnbricating material is put into the cup A, and enters the tube C through the perforations in the bottom of the same. It willthcn escapo through valve D into the chamber immediately underneath, and from there through the valve E into the cylinder. -But if there is steam in the cylinder, the pressure of the same will close the valve E, .and prevent the lubricating material from escaping.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is i I 1. The combination ofv valve E, cup A, tube C, and inner valve D, constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. v y
2. The combination of said parts with ontercup F, arranged, constructed, and operating in the manner substantially as shown and described, and for thel purpose set forth.
' E. H. ASHCROFT.
