UNITED STATES PATENT Orr cn.
EDWIN DAY, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW SETS AND CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 77,215, dated May 9, 1876; application filed April 8, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN DAY, of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Saw Sets and Clamps and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of an end view of my saw set and clamp, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a saw set and clamp, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the stationary jaw of the clamp, formed with or attached to a back, B, which may be screwed into a bench-vise or fastened up stationary in any convenient place. 0 is the movable jaw of the clamp, provided With two arms, D D, which are pivoted to the back B, as shown. These arms are slotted longitudinally for the passage of the bolts to for fastening the clamp, said bolts also passing through corresponding slots in the back B, and having thumb-nuts b upon their front ends, as shown. By means of these slots the bolts may be moved close the jaw is laid a plate, G, held thereon by thumb-screws h h passing through slots ii in the plate.
The saw-teeth are set against the edge of this plate, and thumb-screws m m are arranged on the under side to raise the back edge of the plate, for the purpose of giving it any bevel desired to set the teeth of fine or coarse saws.
As the back edge of this plate is raised the plate moves back against the rest d, making it too narrow to come to the edgeof the clamp. This is obviated by making theplate G slightly tapering, or of wedge shape, and a little longer than the clamp, so that it can be moved to one side until it strikes against the saw or comes flush with theedge of the clamp, when it is fastened by the thumb-screws h h.
The plate G has its two edges of different bevel, and may be reversed, so as to set the teeth of very coarse or fine saws. The sawteeth are set with a punch and hammer, in the ordinary manner. When the saw-teeth are set, the plate G may be removed, and the saw can then be held in the clamp ready for filing.
This device is simple, cheap, and durable, and not liable to get out of order; and by its use all the teeth are set alike, with no danger of breaking the teeth.
. What I claim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slotted tapering plate G, having its edges beveled at different angles, in combination with the jaw A, having rest 01, and the thumb-screws h h and m m, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN DAY.
