GOLF-CLUB.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM F. REACH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicopee, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf-Clubs, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to improvements in golf clubs and more particularly to what is known as the dead stop club which is designed to impart a back spin to the ball when struck so that it will have a minimum amount of roll after striking the ground which is specially desirable in approaching putting greens which are closely guarded by traps.

It will be understood that in making such approaches there are two types of strokes or shots, one where the club head passes through beneath the ball in the exact line of play, and the other what is known as the cut shot when the club is drawn across the ball at an angle to the line of play.

The object of the present invention is to provide a club which will be effective for imparting a backward spin to the ball whether struck by the direct or cut shot or stroke. The invention also aims to provide a construction which will eliminate sharp corners tending to mar or injure the shafts and grips of other clubs carried in the same ba To this end the invention includes the novel construction hereinafter described and particularly defined by the appended claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a face view of a club head constructed according to one form of my invention.

Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a face view of a modified form.

Referring by reference characters to this drawing the numeral 1 designates the club head having a shank for attachment of the customary handle and which may be of Specification of Letters Patent.

the usual outline or shape. The face of the club is provided with ribs 1 and intervening grooves 1 providing a corrugated face, and these corrugations are of wave line form or of a compound or ogee curve.

In the form shown in Fig. 1 the corrugations are curved upwardly from the heel for a suitable distance and then curved downwardly until they approach the outer end of the club head when they again curve upwardly.

In the form shown in Fig. 3 the reverse is true, the corrugations first curving downwardly as they recede from the heel, then straightening out for a distance, and finally again curving downwardly.

The three usual lines of travel of the ball relative to the face of the club, dependent on whether the ball is struck nearer to or farther from the heel are indicated by the dotted lines a-a, a -a and a a -and the line of travel of the ball across the face of the club in the straight shot by the dotted line .7)b, in each figure.

Thus it will be seen that no matter which type of shot or stroke is used the ball will have imparted thereto a maximum spin by reason of its having traveled across the face of the club at approximately right angles to the line of scoring or corrugation.

To prevent injury to the grips and shafts of other clubs carried in the same bag, I terminate the corrugations short of the edges of the club, providing a continuous marginal flange 3 into which the ribs merge.

Thereby I eliminate the sharp corners which are formed when the corrugations extend to the extreme edge of the club.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

A golf club head having a striking face provided with corrugations extending on a compound or ogee curve.
