Description

V P. O. BRUNJES. lmprevement in Machine for Cutting Loaf Sugar. No. 125,536. PatentedApril9,1872.
Jig. I.
UNITED STATES FFIGE.
PETER OTTO BRUNJES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,536, dated April 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER OTTo BRUNJ'ES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Machine for Cutting Loaf-Sugar; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac with two sets of v saws, one set for each fol lower, said saws being made to project through the platform from below and into cavities formed in the under surfaces of tops, extending across the platform over the saws in such a manner that by placing adisk of sugar (previously cut from a loaf) in front of the first follower said disk is forced through thefirst set of saws and divided into strips, and after having passed the first set of saws these strips are forced, by the action of the second follower,
against the second set of saws, whereby they are cut up in cubes of the required size for use.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a platform, which is provided with two guideways, B B, set at right angles toward each other. In these guide-ways are fitted the followers O G, which connect by rods a a with cranks b b, secured to shafts c c, that are geared together in such a manner that one of said followers advances while the other retreats, and vice versa. Said followers act in conjunction with two sets of saws, D D, which are mounted on shafts d d and project through the platform A, (see Figs. 2 and 3,) said shaft being made to extend in a direction transversely across the guide-ways B B, and being furnished with pulleys e e for the purpose of imparting to the saws a rapid rotary motion. Over the saws are placed top plates E E, which are provided with cavities to receive the tops of the saws so as to enable them to cut clear through the disks of sugar exposed to their action. These disks of sugar are out off from loaves in the required thickness, and one after the other is placed before the first follower 0. As this follower advances it forces the disk against and through the first set of saws, said follower being slotted to receive the saw-blades, as shown in Fig. 1, and by the time the disk of sugar has passed through the first set of saws it is cut up in strips, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. At the same time the second follower has reached the rear end of its stroke, and as it advances it pushes the strips of sugar forward against the second set of saws, and said strips are cut up in cubes of the required size for use. \Vhile being exposed to the action of the saws the disks or strips of sugar are held down upon the platform A by the top plates E E.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of two followers, O C, movin on a connnon platform at rightangles toward each other, one advancing while the.
other retreats, and vice versa, in combination with two sets of saws acting in conjunction with said followers, substantially in the manner shown and described.
This specification signed by me this 11th day of March, 1872.
PETER OTTO BRUNJES.
