835,457. Hypodermic syringes. COOKWAITE LABORATORIES Inc. March 1, 1957 [March 1, 1956], No. 6864/57. Class 81 (2). A plunger rod, for use with a syringe containing a cartridge having a piston stopper, includes a pointed barb for connection with the piston stopper so that it may be moved for either injection or aspiration. A hypodermic syringe containing a cartridge 18 fitted with a rear piston stopper 22 and a front stopper (not shown) which is pierced by a double-ended needle, is closed by a head 26 secured by a locking sleeve 24. The plunger 20 is slidable in the locking sleeve and consists of a rod 32 in a sleeve 34. The rod has a spearpoint 38 having barbs 42 with sharpened rear faces 44. The plunger sleeve 34 is movably axially relative to the rod within limits defined by stops (not shown) and has a flange 36 at its forward end. The rod has a fingerpiece 58 and carries a spring 56 which urges the plunger sleeve forwardly relative to the rod so that the spearpoint is normally housed in the sleeve. In use, the plunger 20 is projected so that the flange of the sleeve abuts the piston stopper 22 and the spearpoint pierces the piston stopper. The spearpoint may be removed from the piston stopper by withdrawing the rod so that the spearpoint leaves the piston stopper and enters the sleeve, the abutment of the flange against the piston stopper assisting this action.
