Abstract
724,596. Junction boxes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 4, 1953 [May 7,1952], No. 12306/53. Class 38 (1). A watertight cable connecting box comprises an insulating base 1 and cap 5 screwed thereon, a shoulder 39 on the cap engaging a sealing ring 41 in a gland plate 3, raised portions 37 of which bear on resilient cushions such as 35 located in stuffing-boxes 33 and surrounding cables, such as 31, entering the box through apertures in the base. The cap thus provides clamping pressure both to the ring 41 and the cushions. The stuffing-boxes are conical and sufficiently deep so that where one cable 43 is of less diameter than the cables such as 31, cushion 35 may be compressed further than is necessary to seal cable 31 so that adequate pressure may be applied to a cushion 45 to seal cable 43. Frangible sealing discs 65 may cover the cable apertures before the cables are inserted. In a modification, Fig. 3, for two cables only, cushions 75, 77 are integrally joined by a narrow connecting piece 79 and the stuffing-boxes each comprise two concentric cylindrical portions of different diameter.
