Connecting uppers to insoles and soles; methods of lasting.-In a method of shoe manufacture the upper and insole are preferably lasted in the manner described in Specification 248,409 and the outsole, Fig. 4. is then channelled horizontally round its outer edges at H<1> and a templet T<2>, preferably of leather, is temporarily attached by cement or solution on the side near the shoe to act as a guide and as strengthening means during sewing on. A further templet T<3>, Fig. 4a, of smaller size than the outer sole but of the same shape may be used to strengthen the whole shoe structure when removed from the last. The sole is sewn to the shoe in the channel H<1> by stitches H<4>, Fig. 4b, and after sewing the shoe is replaced on the last, the templet H<3> removed and the channel H<1> cemented up to protect the stitches H<4>. In the lasting operation, as described in Specification 248,409, an upper D, Fig. 3, is pulled over an insole B on a last A provided with an upstanding templet T', Fig. 1. The edge of the upper is secured by a wire stretched between tacks, not shown, at the toe and by a strip F which may be removed or left in the shoe. The templet T' is removed and replaced by a bottom filling G.
