Abstract

1418181 Acoustic detection of inclusions in a fluid; ultrasonic probes E M COLE 27 Feb 1973 9482/73 Headings H4D and H4J The presence of inclusions in a fluid flowing through a flexible tube is detected by deforming at least part of the tube so that it adopts a substantially rectangular cross-section, positioning a pair of supports such that they are urged against respective opposite sides of the tube's cross-section, directing a planar ultrasonic beam transversely through the fluid via one said support, and detecting any change in the ultrasonic signal received by a receiver coupled to the other support. For detecting bubbles in blood passing through a plastics pipe in, e.g. an artificial kidney machine, the pipe is gripped in a probe which houses a CW-energized ultrasonic transmitter and a receiver operated in a throughtransmission mode. The receiver output is AGC-amplified then fed via a filter to a trigger circuit having an adjustable threshold. The trigger circuit responds to any abrupt change in the received signal amplitude and actuates a counter and/or audible alarm. The filter output is recorded and may be analysed to determine bubble size. Other uses of the invention include detecting bubbles in photographic solutions, nuclear reactors, heat exchangers and fuel lines, and checking outgassing operations. Probe details.-As shown the transmitter and receiver 14, 15 each comprise a rectangular piezoelectric slab 16 pre-stressed by sandwiching it between plastics members 17. Blocks 2, 3 support the transmitter and receiver and block 3 has a groove 7 to receive the fluid-carrying pipe 8. The plastics avoids direct transmission of energy to the receiver via the probe material. The pre-stressing clamps the slab 16 vibrations so that these are not significantly affected by pressure pulsations of the fluid. In a modificacation the transmitter and receiver are housed in cavities in the limbs of a C-shaped plastics. member which clips over pipe 8. Magnetostrictive transducers may be used instead of piezoelectric slabs.
