Abstract

1392605 Dentist's tray J A ORAM 11 Sept 1972 [16 Sept 1971] 43245/71 Heading A5R [Also in Division E2] In an adjustable, articulated support for carrying a dentist's tray 35 an arm 10 is transversely pivoted at 17 to a base member 16, 19 and an elongated flexible member in the form of a cable 24 is anchored at one end 25 to the base member and extends at least once round a pulley 13 secured to the arm 10 and gripping the pulley when tensioned to keep the arm rigid when there is a load on the support and to permit articulation of the support when tension is released in the cable 24. In use, an arm 11 secured to the tray 35 is pivoted to a second pulley 14 mounted on the other end of the arm 10 and the cable 24 extends twice round the pulley 14 and is anchored at 36 to the underside of the tray 35. When the arm 11 and tray 35 tend to rotate in a clockwise direction and cable 24 is tensioned and grips the drum 13 such that the support is held rigid against the load. To adjust the support the tray 35 is tilted slightly anti-clockwise and lost motion in the pivots of a link 37 joining the two pulleys 13, 14 permits the tension in the cable 24 to be released sufficiently to enable the arm 10 to be pivoted relative to the pivot pin 21 to maintain the tray in a horizontal attitude. An alternative embodiment is disclosed in the Specification (Figs. 1-5 inc., not shown) wherein the adjustable, articulated support is made up of three arms (10, 11, 12) which are pivoted to three drums (13, 14, 15) and a flexible wire cable (24) connects and is wrapped around the three drums in a manner similar to that disclosed above.
