Abstract
1384647 Indicating measurement JONES & HEALY MARINE Ltd 11 May 1973 [11 May 1972 28 May 1972] 22147/72 and 54815/72 Heading G1J [Also in Division H4] A berthing display system comprises two distance-measuring units, e.g. sonar units, spaced along a jetty to determine the ranges of lengthwise spaced sections of a ship and display means including two elongated illuminable displays the illuminated length of each display representing the respective range. In the embodiment there is computed digitally (1) the distances of the bow and stern sections from the jetty, (2) the lateral velocities of the bow and stern sections and (3) the attitude of the ship's longitudinal axis relative to the length of the jetty. Display, Fig.2. The display device carries sets of L 1 , L 2 ; each set has a green lamp G indicating an approach velocity within safe limits, an amber lamp A indicating an approach velocity within a pre-set band which exceeds the safe limits and a red lamp R which indicates a dangerous approach velocity. Each row of lights D 1 , D 2 represents (by how many lamps are energized) the respective bow and stern ranges, see also Fig.3 (not shown). Red lights T are switched on alternatively at 50 cycles per minute to warn that the ship's attitude exceeds a predetermined value. The range data is displayed to a non-linear scale, preferably inversely logarithmic. The lights D 1 , D 2 are afforded by optical fibre units each including a flame and explosion resistant lamp housing, an optical fibre harness 14 and an indicator block, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown).
