Abstract
1,192,986. Intravenous injection. ESCHMANN BROS. & WALSH Ltd. 31 Aug., 1967, No. 39891/67. Heading A5R. A device for use in administering intravenous injections to a patient comprises a needle holder 3 on a valve body 1, there being a valve element 9 and a valve plunger 5 in the valve body, the plunger having an inlet passage 6 and being adapted to contact the outlet end of a hypodermic syringe thereby to open the valve so that injection liquid may pass from the syringe, through the inlet passage 6 and the valve, and through the needle holder and needle into the patient. As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the device comprises a cylindrical valve body I having integral wings 2 on the surface of which is a coating of contact adhesive by means of which the device may be secured to the patient; alternatively, the wings may be secured to the patient by strapping. Located within the valve body at one end thereof for engagement with a syringe (not shown) is the plunger 5 having an inlet passage 6 which terminates within the valve body as a conical recess 8 adjacent which is the valve element 9; received within the valve body at the other end thereof for attachment to a patient-contacting hypodermic needle (not shown) is a needle holder 3 having an outlet passage 4. Bearing against the needle holder is one end of a coil spring 10 the other end of which bears against the valve element to cause the valve element to bear against a valve seating 11 formed in the valve body and against the periphery of the conical recess in the plunger, a shoulder on the plunger in turn being caused to bear against an abutment 7 formed in the valve body thereby to position the plunger. Adjacent the plunger the valve body is formed with a flared portion 12 for locating the syringe. At least the valve body and the plunger preferably are made of plastics material; the valve element may be made of rubber. To make an injection the syringe is engaged with the flared portion of the valve body to displace the plunger against 'the action of the coil spring whereby, on actuation of the syringe, fluid will flow from the syringe, through the inlet passage, along the valve body around the valve member, and through the outlet passage into the patient via the needle.
