Abstract

1,182,420. Aqueous synthetic resin binder compositions. BECK KOLLER & CO. (ENGLAND) Ltd. 14 Feb., 1967 [14 Sept., 1966], No. 6988/67. Heading C3R. [Also in Division D1] . A binder for fibre-based products consists of an aqueous solution of (a) 90 to 99.9% (by wt. solids) of a water-soluble phenol-aldehyde resole or aminoplast resin and (b) 0.01 to 10% of a water-soluble ammonium or amine salt of a copolymer of 6 to 30 wt. per cent acrylic, methacrylic or crotonic acid and correspondingly 70 to 94% of an ester CH 2 =CR.COOR 1 where R is H or CH 3 and R 1 is methyl to butyl, isobutyl, hexyl, octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, decyl or dodecyl. Specified aminoplasts are aldehyde condensates with urea, thiourea, ethylene or propylene urea, dicyandiamide, guanidine or melamine. The resin may be etherified. Fibre-based products.-The binder may be used to make webs, non-woven fabrics, mats, sheeting or tubular shells or inorganic and/or organic fibres, e.g. of silica, silicon carbide, metal, animal hair or nylon. In the examples a non- woven mineral fibre cloth of thickness 50 mm. and unit weight 50 kg/m.<SP>3</SP> is impregnated by spraying, dried and baked for 10 minutes at 180‹ C. and conditioned for 5 days at 20‹ C. and 65% relative humidity. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,066,042.
