Abstract
1,180,452. Cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 31 Oct., 1968 [1 Nov., 1967], No. 49655/67. Heading H1A. Apparatus for making a cable having a layer of wires with periodical reversal of lay, includes a stationary lay-plate 6 and oscillating lay plates 7, 8, 9, each with a central aperture for a core 5 of conducting wire or wires, and other apertures for stranding wires 1, 2, 3, 4, which are applied to the core after 9, and secured by a flexible binder 10, which may be a textile cord, applied in an open helix by lapping head 11. The lay-plate 9 oscillates through an angle greater than 720 degrees, e.g. 900 degrees, and the lay is reversed at intervals at least twice the length of lay. The plates 7, 8, 9 oscillate at the same frequency and in phase with each other and the maximum displacement of each plate with respect to the preceding plate, i.e. 6, 7, and 8, respectively, is less than 360 degrees, e.g. 300 degrees. They are preferably driven by belts 15-17 from a layshaft 18, the driving wheels 19-21 having diameters in the ratio 1: 2: 3. A reversible hydraulic motor (33) drives 18. Plate 7 is of aluminium alloy with apertures for wires 1, 2, 3, 4, having polytetrafluoroethylene linings (25) to lessen friction, and is mounted on a tubular rotor (26) also of aluminium alloy, carried in bearings (27) and having toothed wheel (29) for engagement with toothed belt 15. A permanent magnet (30) operates limit switches (31, 32) which initiate reversal of drive. Plates 8 and 9 are similar except that the magnet and limit switches are omitted.
