[Also in Division D1] In coating the surface of a flexible support in sheet or web form, the support is applied by suction to the curved surface of a rotary cylindrical drum and while on the drum is passed in front of a device for coating the outer side of the support with a liquid coating medium capable of drying to a permanent coating, the coating being then at least partly dried whilst the support is still maintained under suction. In the arrangement shown sheets 20 are fed from conveyor 21 on to the surface 4 of a perforated drum 1. The drum 1 is mounted for rotation on suitable bearings and is divided internally by fixed partitions 7, 8 into a chamber 10 which is partially evacuated and a chamber which can be subjected to excess pressure. Around the periphery of the chamber 10 part of drum 1 is arranged first a coating applying device 11 and then drying section 12. The coating applying device may be a nozzle device as shown, roller or brush applicator, an electro-static depositing means or a dip-coating device. Drying can be by heated gas or by thermal radiation. After drying the sheets are removed from the drum for example by air nozzle 29 or by the excess pressure in the second chamber of the drum and fed on to conveyor 32 which conveys the sheets through a further dryer 30 having radiating elements 31. The perforations 6 of the drum surface 4 may cover the whole surface or a part only thereof, or masking devices may be provided to mask some of the perforations according to the requirements of the coating operation. Similar apparatus can be used for coating a continuous web unrolled from a roll of the material and after coating rolled into another roll or cut into lengths.
