Wikidata:WikiProject Built heritage
Aim and Scope
editThe aim of the present project is to create the world’s most complete high quality database of built heritage. It builds upon, consolidates, and extends the work carried out in the context of numerous Wiki Loves Monuments contests for which official monuments lists have been compiled for many countries.
The project more specifically serves to coordinate the following activities:
- the creation of an inventory of all existing public databases that contain data about built heritage;
- the implementation and maintenance of ontologies and multilingual thesauri relating to built heritage;
- the ingestion of data about built heritage into Wikidata, including the data from the Monuments Database;
- the enhancement and completion of such data;
- the use of the data to create maintenance lists on Wikipedia;
- the inclusion of the data into Wikipedia and its sister projects, such as in infoboxes or lists.
Background
editThis WikiProject was launched in 2013 when first endeavors were undertaken to start ingesting data from the Monuments Database into Wikidata. Another, similar WikiProject was launched in 2015 with the goal to "wikidatify" Wiki Loves Monuments (Q1353202), as using Wikidata to host the monuments data bases would be more efficient at enabling multi-lingual support for tooling and outreach work than the previously used process. In particular, the work on building lists, the jury tool, the design of the upload campaigns, as well as the work of Erfgoedbot, the bot harvesting monuments data from the many monuments lists on the various language versions of Wikipedia, were to be migrated to run off Wikidata.
In January 2016, Wikimedia Sweden launched its Connected Open Heritage Project with the aim to improve and create knowledge about the built cultural heritage of the world and make it available digitally, with open and free licenses. (The real-life meeting of the WLM international team in February 2017 should also be mentioned here; is there a link to the results available?)
Ways to Contribute
editThere are several ways you can contribute to the project:
- List databases containing data about built heritage on the Data Sources page. In case the databases are not publicly accessible, contact the data holder in order to encourage them to release the data to the public (under a CC-0 Waiver or equivalent).
- Create Wikidata items for the databases about built heritage (= data sources for the data ingestion)
- Clean existing Wikidata items so that they conform to the data modelling guidelines laid out in the Data Structure section.
- Help improving the ontologies and multilingual thesauri (see Data Structure section) needed for the ingestion and proper representation of the data.
- Ingest existing databases containing data about heritage institutions into Wikidata, especially the ones previously used for the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest.
- Tidy up the data after batch ingestion.
- Help improving the quality and completeness of the data.
- Add links to related projects on Wikipedia; draw their contributors' attention to this project page.
- Develop and implement use cases for the data (e.g. by creating maintenance lists for Wikipedia, by including the data in infoboxes or lists on Wikipedia, etc.).
- Help writing step-by-step guidelines for the various tasks.
