Fnatic is a gaming organization originating in Australia and the UK, with registered offices in Australia, the UK and the Netherlands. The Fnatic team was founded by Sam Mathews with help from Joris Van Laerhoven and Anne Mathews. The organization is widely known for a variety of teams, most particularly in having one of the most successful Counter-Strike 1.6 teams in the world. Fnatic's main offices are in London.
Despite being mainly concentrated on Team FPS and Duel eSport titles in the past, Fnatic recruited a strong Asian Brood War team in 2008, with players such as Sen, JayStar, Never and F91 - the team which later became DuskBin. Fnatic enjoyed two fruitful spells with Warcraft III. Their European team held players such as Satiini and RotterdaM, while their later Korean team included FoCuS and Shy.
In anticipation of the release of StarCraft II, Fnatic organized a Rookie Draft, with the aim of discovering StarCraft talent for their new squad. Over 300 players from all around the world fought in the FnaticMSI Rookie Draft for the chance to become a FnaticMSI player, with four players from the top 16 in the tournament taking up places with the competitive gaming behemoth. Fenix, TT1, KawaiiRice and funkay were awarded the spots in Fnatic's new team, but eventually another two top players from the tournament, Krr and Praetor were recruited. With Xeris as their manager, Fnatic continued building up their squad after SC2's release, recruiting bigger names such as Sen, IefNaij and LucifroN.
On June 24, 2011, FnaticMSI signed Korean player Rain. Although not the first time a Korean professional gamer has joined a foreign team, this is the first time that someone as notable as the GSL 3 runner-up has. Rain would be living in the U.S. to practice and participate in tournaments. Fnatic also created a Korean Academy team. After the departure of Xeris as manager, as well as most of their western squad, Fnatic continued building their Korean lineup, most notably, with the Warcraft III legend, Moon, and in March 2012, Fnatic opened a South Korean team house, from where their new team would be based, and well placed to participate in the GSL and GSTL.
Despite mixed results in Korea, in January 2013, Fnatic announced the closure of their operations in South Korea, including letting go of their South Korean players, and closure of the gaming house, and that they would be shifting focus back to Europe, after the huge investment of around $250,000 proved to be unsustainable. Over in Europe, they would be represented by several well known players, such as NightEnD, Naama and SaSe.
Whilst retaining a strong base of professional players, Fnatic's General Manager and StarCraft II Team Manager, Elroy 'Noname' Pinto continued to acquire and develop young and talented European and North American players such as Harstem, Miniraser and Zanster the most successful of which would eventually be promoted to the professional roster. Fnatic ensured that all their players remained in the limelight by creating content particularly through their own dedicated caster, Pughy to host events such as the Fnatic Showmatch and the SteelSeries King of the Hill.
