Age of Empires I is the first game of the Age of Empires series. Besides the original game (1997) there are also an expansion called The Rise of Rome (RoR) (1998), and two remasters: the Definitive Edition (2018) and Return of Rome (2023), which is integrated in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.

- The competitive scene of Age of Empires I (Voobly, RoR 1.0) is mainly based in Vietnam nowadays.
- At the end of 2022 Facebook Gaming announced to not pay out money for tournaments directly anymore.
- In 2023 there was a scandal between CSDN Studios and other teams, resulting in a split competitive scene.
