There is a story attached to the subtitle which would place composition of the work somewhat after 1830-31 if true in all details, but it is quite possible, as noted by Mark Rowe (author of a 2008 book on Ernst) in his notes (linked above) to a recent recording of this Elegy, that the work is "an arrangement or simple re-titling of an Adagio" of Ernst's composition that had been in his repertoire since 1829. - Schissel
