These Additional Terms and Conditions apply to all registered users of this website. All registered users are also subject to the F1000 Research Limited (“F1000”) General Terms and Conditions and Privacy policy.
As a user of the website you may do the following actions which will be subject to the additional terms and conditions below:

By clicking “I accept the Terms and Conditions” before you register, submit Content (as defined below) for publication or post a comment, you agree to be bound by these Additional Terms and Conditions which will form a binding contract between you and F1000.
We may amend these Additional Terms and Conditions or any part of them from time to time. Every time you wish to use our website, please check these terms to ensure you understand the terms that apply at that time. The date and version number of these Additional Terms and Conditions are set out above.
Registration Terms and Conditions
The personal details that you provide on registration must be your true identity, and you must not impersonate any person or misrepresent your identity in any way.
You must provide F1000 with complete, accurate and truthful information and you must inform F1000 of any changes to that information (for example your email address) by updating your details via My Research or emailing [email protected]. F1000 is not responsible for any loss or delay caused by you not providing us with complete, accurate and truthful information, or as a result of your failure to update your information.
Your registration is personal to you. Each registration is for a single user only. Your username and password in combination ('Your ID') will be unique to you. You agree to use a strong password and to keep it confidential and not disclose it to any third party. You must not permit any other person to share use of Your ID or permit multiple users to access this website using Your ID.
You are responsible for all use of this website using Your ID, for the safeguarding of Your ID and for preventing unauthorized use of Your ID. If you believe that there has been or will be a potential breach of Your ID security please notify us immediately by emailing [email protected]. F1000 shall not be liable for your failure to comply with this clause 8.
You may discontinue your registration at any time by notifying us at [email protected] of your intention to delete your account. On receipt of your notification, we shall take steps to deactivate your account. Such deletion shall not affect any published Content or Comments authored by you.
You will be required to provide Your ID to gain access to this website.
Publication Terms and Conditions
These Publication Terms and Conditions relate to the publication of any article, poster, slide or other document (the “Content”) on our website. These are the terms on which your Content may be published by F1000. These do not relate to the publication of any user Comments (as defined below), which are covered by the User Comments Terms and Conditions below.
You warrant and represent on behalf of yourself and your co-authors (if any) that:
you own copyright in the Content and have the necessary rights and permissions to grant F1000 a non-exclusive licence to publish the Content on an Open Access Basis under a Creative Commons Attribution Licence (CC BY) subject to these Publication Terms and Conditions and in accordance with clause 14 below;
in the case of a multi-authored Content, you confirm that you are authorized by your co-authors to enter into these Terms and Conditions as their agent on their behalf;
if the Content includes materials of others, including but not limited to proprietary text, illustrations, tables data, audio, audio, video, film stills, screenshots and musical notation, you have obtained, at your own expense, the written permission of the copyright owners of all such materials to enable you to grant the licence set out in clause 14 to F1000 and you will provide such written permissions to F1000 promptly if so requested;
you have acknowledged all sources of research funding, as required by your research funder, and disclosed any financial interest or benefit you have arising from the direct applications of your research;
Nothing in the Content is or could be construed as being obscene, defamatory, discriminatory, fraudulent, or in violation of any right of privacy, and does not plagiarise any another published work or infringe any intellectual property rights or any other human, personal or other rights of any person or entity or is otherwise unlawful;
All persons who have a reasonable claim to authorship are named in the Content as co-authors including yourself, and you have not fabricated or misappropriated anyone’s identity, including your own;
Nothing in the Content infringes any duty of confidentiality which you may owe to anyone else or violates any contract, and all of the institutions in which work recorded in the Content was carried out have authorized publication of the Content;
In the case of articles only and not for posters, slides and documents, the Content is original and has not been previously published. For the avoidance of doubt, (a) an article is content that on publication by F1000 is subject to an article processing charge; (b) a poster is the presentation of research information typically on a single page normally made available during a poster session at a congress or conference with an academic or professional focus; (c) slides are created using presentation software and contain research information that has been brought together by an individual or representatives of a research team/s created with an academic or professional audience in mind to be presented verbally at a congress or conference; and (d) a document is a report, briefing, set of guidelines, or official training material or meeting outline, normally based upon research or to directly support a research-related event;
All research in the Content has been conducted in an ethical and responsible manner, and in full compliance with all relevant codes of experimentation and legislation. If the Content reports in vivo experiments, research involving human participants (including clinical trials) or the use of biological material from humans (e.g. human stem cells, biopsies or tissues), or the use of animal models (specifically vertebrates and some regulated invertebrates e.g. cephalopods) that will require formal approval from an ethics committee, it must include a written statement to confirm that such work was conducted with the formal approval of the local ethics committee or institution/independent research committee (IRB). Clinical trials must also have been registered in an appropriate registry and the trial registration number must be included in the article.
In respective of any person upon whom the Content relates to (e.g. a patient ), or who participated in the research you have conducted and who is described in the Content, that person (or, if applicable, that person’s parent or legal guardian or, where such a person is deceased, that person’s estate) has (1) given written informed consent to the inclusion of material, text or image, pertaining to themselves in the Content, and (2) acknowledged in writing that they cannot be identified via the Content, and further that you have anonymised that person such that they are not identifiable to any reader of the Content as far as possible;
You have complied with all mandatory laboratory health and safety procedures in the course of conducting any experimental work reported in the Content, the Content contains all appropriate warnings concerning any specific and particular hazards that may be involved in carrying out any experiments or procedures described in the Content or involved in instructions, materials or formulae in the Content; the Content includes explicitly any relevant safety precautions; and cites, if an accepted Standard or Code of Practice is relevant, a reference to the relevant Standard or Code; and
You have read and complied with the guidelines for authors on the F1000 website.
You grant to F1000 a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide right to publish the Content on an Open Access basis, including the right to reproduce, distribute, display, license and store the Content including without limitation any text, artwork, images, tables and photographs contained therein, in whole or in part, in all forms, formats and media whether now known or yet to be developed, including print, digital and electronic form and as transparencies, including the right to edit and adapt the Content for the purpose of making such editorial changes as F1000 reasonably considers necessary to make the Content suitable for publication and the right to reproduce the Content for the purposes of indexing it, including the right to sub-licence this function to third-party indexing agencies.
You confirm the Content will be made available by F1000 on an Open Access basis under a Creative Commons Attribution Licence (CC BY), and that you have read and understood the terms of the CC BY licence.
You confirm you will pay the applicable APC once your article has been accepted for publishing (i.e., following successful completion of our pre-publication checks). The accounts team will send an invoice following acceptance of your article. The invoice must be paid within 30 days of the invoice date. If payment is not received within 90 days of the invoice date, F1000 reserves its rights to take further action in respect of such payment.
You consent to F1000 using your Content for marketing and promotional purposes, at F1000’s discretion.
You hereby agree to indemnify and keep indemnified F1000, its affiliates, contractors and agents from and against any and all losses (including without limitation direct, indirect and consequential loss), costs, claims, damages or expenses of whatever nature and howsoever caused arising directly or indirectly from any breach of these Terms and Conditions, including the warranties set out in clause 12, or from any alleged facts or circumstances which, if true, would constitute a breach of any of the warranties set out in clause 12.
Initial Publication of Articles
If the article is accepted for publication by F1000, F1000 will publish your article on the F1000 website in advance of any peer review being performed on the article. The acceptability of the article shall be decided by F1000 in its discretion, bearing in mind the F1000 publishing policies and guidelines. F1000 reserves the right, at their discretion, to not proceed with publication at any time or to remove the Content following publication if there are legal concerns with the article.
Publication of your article is subject to you providing F1000 with the underlying data underlying the results contained in the article if requested, or any other data in relation to your article that F1000 may request from time to time, and F1000 validating such data. Any failure by you to provide this data to F1000 shall result in F1000 either delaying the publication date of the article or not publishing the article at all, as decided in F1000’s sole discretion.
Peer Review of Articles
Once the article has been published on F1000 website, F1000 will invite reviewers to perform peer review on the article. You agree to your article being peer reviewed by at least two independent reviewers, in accordance with the F1000 peer review guidelines on the F1000 website, and to those peer review comments being published on the F1000 website alongside the article.
Your article will successfully complete the peer review process if it has received two “Approved” statuses by reviewers, or if it has received one “Approved” status and two “Approved with Reservations” statuses by two further reviewers (the “Completion Criteria”).
If an article has achieved the Completion Criteria, the article may be picked up for indexing by Google Scholar, or any other indexing service. F1000 shall have no liability to you in the event that your article is not indexed by Google Scholar or any other indexing service.
Revised Versions of Articles
Where your article has passed through an initial round of peer review but not achieved the Completion Criteria, then you may submit a revised version of the article for a further round of peer review, such revisions taking into account the reviewer’s feedback. In the event that your article has not achieved the Completion Criteria after a reasonable number of revised versions, as decided by F1000 acting reasonably, F1000 have the right to state that any further versions submitted will not be submitted for further peer review by F1000.
F1000 shall use its reasonable endeavours to ensure that an article is peer reviewed by suitable qualified experts, but shall have no liability for any failure of the article to achieve the Completion Criteria, including where the reviewers have been invited to perform peer review by F1000 but have not done so for their own reasons.
User Comment Terms and Conditions
Certain parts of this website offer the opportunity for users to post and exchange opinions, information, material and data ('Comments') in areas of the website. You may post Comments on the website, and such Comments shall be in accordance with these User Comment Terms and Conditions.
You warrant and represent that:
you are entitled to post the Comments on the website and have all necessary licenses and consents to do so;

You hereby agree to indemnify and keep indemnified F1000, its affiliates, contractors and agents from and against any and all losses (including without limitation direct, indirect and consequential loss), costs, claims, damages or expenses of whatever nature and howsoever caused arising directly or indirectly from any breach of these Terms and Conditions or arising from the Comments posted on this website or content contained in any email sent using the facilities provided by the website by you including without limitation as a result of any infringement of any intellectual property or other proprietary rights, defamation, obscenity or the Comments being otherwise unlawful.
To the extent permitted by applicable laws, F1000 shall not be responsible or liable for the Comments or for any loss, cost, liability, damages or expenses caused and or suffered as a result of any use of and/or posting of and/or appearance of the Comments on this website.
