[edit]From Vulgar Latin *ravidānus, from Latin ravĭdus, formed from rāvus (“grey, tawny”). Or, from Old Spanish roudano, a Germanic borrowing, from Gothic 𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌹 (raudai), inflection of 𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌸𐍃 (rauþs, “red”).
