[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *nisdá,[1] from Indo-European *ni-sd-óm.[1]
In Eastern Baltic languages the anlaut *n changed into *l due to contamination with *legʰ-.[2] Cognate with Latvian ligzda, Polish gniazdo,[1][3] Old English nest,[1] Latin nīdus (“abode”)[1] and Sanskrit नीड (nīḍá-).[1]
