[edit]From Middle High German kīmen, from kīm, kīme (“sprout”) (see Keim). Supplanted or merged with Middle High German kīnen (“to sprout”), from Old High German kīnan, from Proto-Germanic *kīnaną (“to germinate; sprout”).
