[edit]From Middle Limburgish nālde, from Old Limburgish nālda, by metathesis from Proto-West Germanic *nāþlu (compare Luxembourgish Nol, Dutch naald, and Central Franconian Nool), from Proto-Germanic *nēþlō. Also cognate with German Nadel, and English needle.
