German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Ignatius by dropping the Latin ending.
Pronunciation
[edit]Proper noun
[edit]Ignaz m (proper noun, strong, genitive Ignaz' or Ignazens or (with an article) Ignaz, plural Ignaze or Ignaz)
- a male given name, equivalent to English Ignatius
Usage notes
[edit]- The name was popular mostly in Bavaria and Austria. A petform was Nazi, which contributed to the nickname for "National Socialist" (the Nazi Party having its roots in Bavaria).
- At the same time, ironically, Ignaz was popular among Jews as a loose Germanization of Isaak. Especially outside Austro-Bavarian areas it came to be regarded as a typically Jewish name.
