[edit]Etymology 2
[edit]First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 시〯냏〯 (Yale: sǐnǎyh), from *실〯 (*sǐl, “valley”) + 냏〯 (nǎyh, “stream”); the former element, still widely found in local placenames, was likely no longer an independent word by Middle Korean, having been uniformly replaced by Middle Korean 골〯 (kwǒl) (Lee and Ramsey 2011, p. 63).
