Etymology
[edit]From the root ع و ر (ʕ-w-r), itself related to the roots ع ي ر (ʕ-y-r) and ع ر ي (ʕ-r-y). Possibly cognate with Hebrew ערווה.

- وَٱلْمُنَاظِرُ لَا يَنْفَكُّ عَنْ طَلَبِ عَثَرَاتِ أَقْرَانِهِ، وَتَتَبُّعِ عَوْرَاتِ خُصُومِهِ. حَتَّى إِنَّهُ لَيُخْبَرُ بِوُرُودِ مُنَاظِرٍ إِلَى بَلَدِهِ فَيَطْلُبُ مَنْ يُخْبِرُ بَوَاطِنَ أَحْوَالِهِ، وَيَسْتَخْرِجُ بِٱلسُّؤَالِ مَقَابِحَهُ حَتَّى يَعُدَّهَا ذَخِيرَةً لِنَفْسِهِ فِي إِفْضَاحِه وَتَخْجِيلِهِ إِذَا مَسَّتْ إِلِيْهِ حَاجَةٌ. حَتَّى إِنَّهُ لَيَسْتَكْشِفُ عَنْ أَحْوَالِ صِبَاهُ، وَعَنْ عُيُوبِ بَدَنِهِ، فَعَسَاهُ يَعْثُرُ عَلَى هَفْوَةٍ أَوْ عَلَى عَيْبٍ بِهِ مِنْ قَرَعٍ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ. ثُمَّ إِذَا أَحَسَّ بِأَدْنَى غَلَبَةٍ مِنْ جِهَتِهِ عَرَّضَ بِهِ إِنْ كَانَ مُتَمَاسِكًا.
- wal-munāẓiru lā yanfakku ʕan ṭalabi ʕaṯarāti ʔaqrānihi, watatabbuʕi ʕawrāti ḵuṣūmihi. ḥattā ʔinnahu layuḵbaru biwurūdi munāẓirin ʔilā baladihi fayaṭlubu man yuḵbiru bawāṭina ʔaḥwālihi, wayastaḵriju bi-s-suʔāli maqābiḥahu ḥattā yaʕuddahā ḏaḵīratan linafsihi fī ʔifḍāḥih wataḵjīlihi ʔiḏā massat ʔiliyhi ḥājatun. ḥattā ʔinnahu layastakšifu ʕan ʔaḥwāli ṣibāhu, waʕan ʕuyūbi badanihi, faʕasāhu yaʕṯuru ʕalā hafwatin ʔaw ʕalā ʕaybin bihi min qaraʕin ʔaw ḡayrihi. ṯumma ʔiḏā ʔaḥassa biʔadnā ḡalabatin min jihatihi ʕarraḍa bihi ʔin kāna mutamāsikan.

- waʔiḏ qālat ṭāʔifatun minhum yā ʔahla yaṯriba lā muqāma lakum fārjiʕū wayastaʔḏinu farīqun minhumu n-nabiyya yaqūlūna ʔinna buyūtanā ʕawratun wamā hiya biʕawratin ʔin yurīdūna ʔillā firāran
- Abdulala Maududi: And when a section of them said: “(O people of Yathrib), now there is no place for you to stay, so turn back.” (And call to mind) when a section of them was seeking permission from the Prophet to leave, saying: “Our houses are exposed (to attack),” although they were not exposed (to attack); they only wished to flee (from the battle-front).
