Ottoman Turkish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain.[1] Perhaps from بای (bay, “rich”) + قوش (kuš, “bird”).[2][3][4][5] Alternatively, inherited from Proto-Turkic *bāyk- (“owl”), and folk-etymologically connected to *kuĺ (“bird”).[6] Compare also بایقره (baykara, “a bird of prey”).
Cognate with Azerbaijani bayquş, Turkmen bāýguş, Kazakh байғыз (baiğyz), Persian بایقوش (bâyquš) (a Turkic borrowing).
