Etymology

Of Kipchak origin from Proto-Turkic *āl (shiny, glittering) + -ен (-en), reinforced by Russian а́лый (ályj, scarlet) and Turkish al (crimson). Encountered as part of the name Old Church Slavonic Елтимир (Eltimir), a Bulgarian warlord from the 13th century, believed to be a brother of czar George Terter.
