Etymology

[edit]

From Byzantine Greek γκρινιάζω (nkriniázō), γρινιάζω (griniázō). Either from γκρίνια (gkrínia, moaning, complaining) +‎ -άζω (-ázo) (but possibly vice versa, a back-formation of γκρίνια from the verb). Or from dialectal Italian grignare (grind teeth) (contemporary Italian digrignare), from the Frankish *grīnan (to grin). Also, possible influence from the mediaeval synonym γρυνίζω (grunízō), associated to the ancient γρυλίζω (grulízō, grunt).[1][2]
