From Ancient Greek ἥλιος (hḗlios, sun, sunlight), from Proto-Hellenic *hāwélios, from a pre-Hellenic or later Proto-Indo-European *sāwélios, from Proto-Indo-European *sóh₂wl̥.

Cognate with Mariupol Greek и́люс (íljus).
