Talk:Shetland Islands
Atlantic Airways
[edit]I moved this info from the page to here, since it is not really relevant if they are currently not operating flights:
The Faroese airline Atlantic Airways used to provide a twice weekly seasonal (June to October) service from London (Stansted), but this route has not operated since 2009 due to the difficulties experienced by passengers travelling without passports when fog at Sumburgh caused the flight to be diverted to Atlantic Airways' home airport in the Faroe Islands.

- I agree, and given that this is 6-year-old news, I'd say you could have just deleted it with an edit summary, though moving it here did no harm. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:28, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
Scalloway Isles
[edit]There are three small islands linked by road to Scalloway that each have their own near-hollow page: Trondra and West & East Burra. There's little there, just one B&B between all three it looks like, and not much to do other than pootle down the lane, admire the view, then come back. So they're similar to the Churchill Barrier islands in Orkney, described on that "Mainland" page, but without any South Ronaldsay meriting fuller description. I propose to incorporate them into Scalloway and redirect. Seem reasonable? Grahamsands (talk) 18:02, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
No voices pro or con so I've now incorporated those islands' content into Scalloway - which took most of four lines in "See". This is final call for comment, then I'll redirect them on Mon 10 June. Grahamsands (talk) 18:05, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
That was done but raised the question of the other islands.
- Yell, Unst, Foula & Fair Isle had their own pages, so those were populated
- Papa Stour, Fetlar and Mousa were described under their port of departure
- Whalsay and Out Skerries have been placed under Mainland "See" - there wasn't another page to attach them to, and they don't merit their own.
- LATER they did acquire their own pages.
The other problem was a ponderous intro & understand, though it made many good points. These have moved into various see & do sections (eg music) so they feel part of the traveller experience not a separate download of knowledge. Grahamsands (talk) 10:39, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
Oil fields as "Other destinations"
[edit]I think that oil fields are veyond the mandate of Wikivoyage. Oil workers are not going to be using Wikivoyage in their research. Can we remove these? Ground Zero (talk) 18:11, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- I support removing these, as they are not near the coast. It might be different if the oil field was 1 mile from the coast and you could stand on the beach and look at oil rig operations. AlasdairW (talk) 23:57, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
- I added back a brief comment in Understand, as it's relevant for the general traveller to know how this industry is evolving towards its sunset. Grahamsands (talk) 17:25, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
Sound
[edit]Sound is a residential district of Lerwick, about 1½ miles west of town centre. There is no reason to go there except to visit Auntie Morag. I propose folding that page back into Lerwick. Grahamsands (talk) 15:41, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- Support - I'm not familiar with the Shetland Islands but a quick look at the map was enough. Even the only listing in Sound with coordinates is already listed in Lerwick. --Ypsilon (talk) 16:45, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- Support. I spent an amazing week in Shetland, but did not feel the need to visit Sound. (Auntie Morag came into Lerwick to have tea with us there.) Ground Zero (talk) 20:04, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- Support I would expect Sound to be a travel topic about headphones etc, and if Lerwick needed a western district, it would be Clickimin. For completeness, please announce this on the Sound talk page and wait a few days, so the IP that created the article is kept in touch. AlasdairW (talk) 20:22, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
I've implemented that sound advice. Grahamsands (talk) 17:27, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
- That sounds good. --Ypsilon (talk) 16:26, 6 September 2024 (UTC)
