"Merge" tag

I think this is a fine article topic, and instead of being merged, should be turned into a good article. The problem right now is not the topic but the quality of the article. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:11, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

The suggestion that Forbidden City should be covered under Dongcheng District is misguided. While it is administratively part of the Dongcheng District, it should be borne in mind that Dongcheng and Xicheng are divided by reference to the Forbidden City, and it is a pretty much random administrative decision to include the Forbidden City in the former rather than the latter. Geographically and culturally it makes no sense. Given that Wikivoyage does not always follow administrative district lines anyway, it would make more sense to have the Forbidden City as its own article, or perhaps expanded to cover the surrounding areas such as Tiananmen, Qianmen, Jingshan, Beihai and Zhongnanhai. All of these are nearby and it could make sense for a visitor to plan their itinerary to cover these attractions together, even though administratively some are in Dongcheng District and some are in Xicheng District. The article could be called "Forbidden City and Imperial City", which is quite valid as a "district" or city subdivision article, similarly to "Prague/Castle and Lesser Town". --PalaceGuard008 (talk) 14:46, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Normally we discourage articles for individual attractions. However, the Forbidden City is as far as I understand large and complex and could be an exception. I've added the standard headings for a city district to the article. --ϒpsilon (talk) 15:43, 2 November 2014 (UTC)

Mapshape weirdness

From "Understand":

"In 2005 the Palace Museum began a comprehensive plan to restore every remaining building and structure to their 1912 appearance. It began with repairing the damage caused by the 1923 fire; it is expected to be finished in 2021."

It's 2024 now, though the pandemic intervened. How is the work going? I checked Wikipedia, and the most complete info seems to be at w:History of the Forbidden City#Present, but all it says is:

"Currently, the Palace Museum is responsible for the preservation and restoration of the Forbidden City. Building heights around the Forbidden City are restricted. In 2005, a sixteen-year restoration project was started to repair and restore all buildings in the Forbidden City to their pre-1912 state. This is the largest restoration of the Forbidden City undertaken in two centuries, and involves progressively closing off sections of the Forbidden City for assessment, repairs, and restoration. Also as part of the project, some derelict or destroyed sections are being rebuilt. The gardens of the Palace of Establishing Prosperity, destroyed by fire in 1923, were rebuilt in 2005, but remain closed to the public. The interior was also designed in a different style, and the buildings are used by visiting dignitaries."

Anyone have more definitive, time-specific information?

I did a search on the Internet in both English and Chinese, and it seems to me that the work is still ongoing, but I could only find time-specific information for specific buildings. The most recent report I could find says that work on the Palace of Celestial Favor will be completed by 2027.
