Talk page etiquette

[edit]

Although it is not strictly against policy, it is typically not considered good wiki etiquette to remove or comment-out other users' postings to your talk page. User talk pages exist for the purpose of communication with other users, and it is as important for other users to be able to see what has been posted to you as it is for you to read it. For instance, the standard welcome message informs other users that you have been given some basic information on the operation of Wikiquote, so newer postings may refer to it or assume that you have been properly informed. (I realize that you are also a Wikipedia user, but there are some differences between WP and WQ, so it's still a good idea to review the WQ-specific information.) If you want to "get rid" of something that you've dealt with, you can archive it and leave a link to your talk-page archive on the main user talk page, which de-clutters the page while allowing others to review your earlier discussions. (This is the same practice that is encouraged on Wikipedia.) ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:13, 8 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Unidentified episode

[edit]

Please do not remove the "Unidentified episode" heading (or links to that heading in a custom table of contents) in TV-show articles, as you did for Firefly. There are two important reasons not to do this:

  1. Wiki articles are never finished, so one cannot say that nothing new will ever be added. Nor can we expect all editors to know exactly what episode a quote was from. (Indeed, many people add quotes they found on the Internet without any idea of a source besides the name of the overall work.) Thus we need a place to put these quotes until other editors can locate them properly (or delete them).
  2. Wikiquote, in general, follows the Wikipedia principle of not having headings for empty sections. However, WQ faces two problems WP does not. First, because of the very different nature of our material, we break up our articles by the quality of the sources (thus "Sourced" and "Unsourced" headings), allowing new editors to try to intuit the need to organize by and cite sources. But we've found that "Unsourced" isn't very clear in TV articles, so we have the unusual "Unidentified episode" to make this clearer. Second, we have far too many 1-time editors and too few regular editors, so it's much more important for anything usual (like an uncommon heading for material that doesn't fit under existing headings) to be made as clear as we can make it for inexperienced editors without disrupting the article for readers. This is our compromise.

As long as I'm bothering you with advice and explanations ☺, I'd also recommend that whenever you edit a custom table of contents to add, change, or remove a link, you verify that your change is also made in the article. (In Firefly, you removed the "Unidentified episode" TOC link without removing the heading.) I hope you find this information useful (and not too annoying!). ~ Jeff Q (talk) 21:59, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ah, fair enough; I hadn't even thought about that difference between WQ and WP (where I'm far more involved). My bad, thanks for the heads up.
Also, I could have sworn that I did remove the heading... bah. I fail at Wikiquote. :) EVula // talk // 19:21, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Jeff Dunham

[edit]

Thank you for trimming the Jeff Dunham page. In our Village Pump discussions on revising the guidelines for limitations of quotes, we had reached the consensus that five quotes maximum would be allowable for spoken-word albums, including standup comedy. It's on this basis, for example, that I've been trimming the pages for Lewis Black, Dane Cook, Bill Hicks et al. For this reason I would like to request, since you've already worked on the page for Dunham, that you trim Arguing with Myself and Spark of Insanity to five quotes apiece. If you would prefer not to, let me know and I will do the trimming. - InvisibleSun 18:15, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... considering the wide range of characters, what about five quotes per character? I can see that as keeping in line with the spirit of the policy, considering that Black, Cook, and Hicks are all single-man shows, whereas a Dunham show consists of his opening commentary (none of which is quoted, which is a good thing; it's funny, but not as easily quotable), then several different characters.
Further compounding this is the definition of a "line", in regards to dialogue. "Later you'll realize you were actually setting a goal" is funny as hell, but only after being followed by the set up. I've tried to cluster the related jokes as best as possible (including cutting some of the jokes that run right into each other to make future pruning easier); would each "cluster" count as a line?
I'm plenty willing to do the pruning myself, I just think that it might be too stringent, as this is a somewhat unique case. EVula // talk // 19:19, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
My two cents worth: I think that a "cluster" as you have said can be counted as a "line" in much the same way that a (small) piece of dialogue is counted for film or TV show pages. But I do think we need to try to stay within the proposed limits on the number of quotes. I agree that Jeff's shows are a bit hard to do this with, given the wide range of characters, but we face the same dilemma when dealing with TV shows or films that offer many characters. In those cases, we are setting limits based on the length of the film or show and I think we should act similarly here. Given that the average comedy show or CD is around an hour long, we have settled on the limit of 5 quotes, as we do with films and shows. ~ UDScott 19:36, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, bummer. I'm going to prune them in favor of how long their bits are; Bubba J.'s bit is fairly short in comparison to the Walter bit, so I might ditch all of his quotes in favor of another Walter gag.
Well, on the plus side, it'll mean we can get rid of the Sweet Daddy Dee quotes; I never thought he was as funny as some of his other characters. :D
Tonight is going to suck as far as my free time goes, but I'll try to get it done sometime between now and before the weekend is out. EVula // talk // 20:06, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your question

[edit]

You wrote:
So now that I know what the guidelines are for comedians, what about for movies? I want to clean up the V for Vendetta movie article, but want to know how much of it can be kept. EVula // talk // 23:02, 10 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

The general consensus is that we allow 5 quotes per hour of a given work (e.g. film or TV show), so it depends on the running time of the film. In the case of V for Vendetta, that has a running time of 132 minutes, I would say you should trim it to 11 quotes. See Wikiquote:Village_pump#Copyright_guidelines_for_trimming_articles for more discussion on the trimming efforts. ~ UDScott 00:40, 11 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ah, excellent, thanks for the link. I'll see what I can do to trim down some of the stuff that I'm most familiar with. (and if anyone cuts the v-heavy line in favor of some other line, heads are going to roll. :)
I'm going to leave the "Quotes from other sources" section, though; both sources are in the public domain, so there's no concern there. I'm assuming that the reviews are outside this requirement as well, yes? EVula // talk // 05:10, 11 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

MST3K

[edit]

I noticed that you've volunteered to trim the Mystery Science Theater 3000 page. Just the other day I got a note from Jeffq in which he had also expressed an interest in trimming that article. Perhaps you might want to get in touch with him and coordinate something in this regard.

Thanks for your work on the Jeff Dunham page. Standup comic pages are a constant source of copyvio. Fans naturally want to quote all of the jokes: which means, in effect, replicating entire routines. - InvisibleSun 19:21, 11 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

As I've just posted on its talk page (see for details), I fully support severe trimming of MST3K. I've been far too negligent of this massive article, which frequently requires major trimming that I used to do periodically. I'll also try to jump in as I have time. Meanwhile, have at it! ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:30, 11 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think spinning off the seasons into individual sub-pages might be an excellent way to maintain the article(s) in the future. I think we can all agree that the current size of the article makes it fairly unwieldy... EVula // talk // 23:41, 11 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I've realized that I'm going to have practically zilch spare time over the next couple of months. I've removed it from my listing; I'll help out where I can, but I don't want anyone to think that I'm "reserving" that page for myself. Bummer. :\ EVula // talk // 16:08, 14 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your header

[edit]

Hey there, EVula. I just wanted to tell you that I based my header off yours. I've been thinking of making a header for some time now, and I just thought yours was the simplest. I also used some of your userboxes. I hope it's no problem with you. Oh, by the way, congratulations on your adminship here. :) Being an administrator on quite a few wikis must be a busy job for you. I'm sure someone like you can handle that rather well. – RyanCross (talk) 06:35, 18 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I need to keep a list of people that use my header, userboxes, or matrix; if it wasn't for that damn GFDL, I could be rich! ;) (it's totally not a problem; the more the merrier)
As for all the adminships... yeah, it's a bit tough to balance, but I'm generally on Wikipedia every day, and swing by Wikisource and Wikiquote at least once a day anyway. On Commons, I try to delete at least a handful of bad images every day. Meta and Wikispecies have pretty much dropped off my radar for the most part, but they're very well patrolled anyway; there's generally nothing for me to do around there these days. :) EVula // talk // // 15:25, 18 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Alright, thank you very much for your permission. :) Ah, well, it sounds like you handle things well around the Foundation. :) I know how it feels to try to be active on more than one wiki. I'm active on only three right now, but I hope to become more active here at English Wikiquote from now on. I was only semi-active the past three months.
Well, I hope to see you around, EVula. If you disagree with an edit of mine, feel free to revert and tell me about it so we can discuss it. I have some experience with Wikiquote from being an active editor (and administrator) at Simple English Wikiquote, but the English Wikiquote is slightly different when it comes to articles and the manual of style. But I hope to get the hang of things very soon. :) – RyanCross (talk) 00:11, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
If I can make admin here, I'm sure you can. ;) You've at least got sysop experience at another Wikiquote; in my mind, that makes you qualified enough for here.
Just for ##### and giggles, I once did up a version of w:User:EVula/sidebar2 that had "I'm an admin" boxes for all of the projects; I honestly didn't think I'd get as far down that list as I am now. :) EVula // talk // // 05:35, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your kind words, and I'm honoured that you think I'm qualified for adminship, but in my mind, I just want to contribute to articles for now. :) That's why we're here, is it not? ;) Well... maybe adminship might be useful for me along the way... since I already needed some pages speedy deleted (as you can see)... but not now. Maybe you can ask later on if you want. ;) I may consider it if I feel I would be a good administrator here...
Heh, I wonder how long that list will go from here. :) What's next? Wikibooks? Wiktionary? Wikinews? Wikiversity (though, I never really understood their adminship process)? These wikis? ;) Just joking. Anyway, I can see you're pretty dedicated to being an administrator on wikis and doing maintenance work around. Impressive! I'm sure many people appreciate your work you do, both, with articles and the work you do as an administrator. :) I know I do at least. – RyanCross (talk) 06:32, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, of all those projects, the English Wikinews is the only one I'm actually thinking I could run an RfA at, though not right now; I haven't been there in forever, though at one point I was actually moderately active there. Oh well... (though I have considered requesting adminship on some of the projects I'm most active in maintaining interwikis on; I could probably pass, if they accepted the "I'm just here to maintain interwikis on fully-protected templates" argument. *shrug*)
As for easing into adminship, that's a good idea. Each wiki is different, and figuring out those differences can make the difference between a crappy admin and a good admin. ;) EVula // talk // // 07:13, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Wikinews, eh? The projects I've really only had interest in are Wikipedia and Wikiquote (and Wiktionary for a short time only). Well, I wish you luck at Wikinews. :) I'm sure you'll be helpful to Wikinews as well when you run for adminship there if you decide to.
Well, it's been nice talking to you. I hope to see you around, EVula. :) – RyanCross (talk) 07:22, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bud Selig

[edit]

Hey there, EVula. It's me again. Could you possibly look over the Bud Selig article for me and look over the formatting of it? I've been working on it all week, so I just want someone to evaluate my work and see if there are any problems. One thing I'm not entirely sure about are the authors in the {{cite web}} templates. You see, some of the sourcing as you can see say something like "Selig's first wife quoted in Nicholas Thompson." It doesn't sound right, IMO. What do you think? – RyanCross (talk) 20:48, 26 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Overall, it looks good to me (I tweaked the quote from his first wife). However, I'll readily admit that I'm not necessarily the most knowledgeable when it comes to Wikiquote's manual of style and other standard practices; I'm just a workhorse here. :) EVula // talk // // 21:09, 26 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Alright, thanks anyway. I think you gave me an idea on how I should format the authors and the person who said the quote now. And yeah, you do seem to do better with admin-related tasks. No wonder why you are an admin on so many wikis. :) – RyanCross (talk) 21:12, 26 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

!Voting in dates

[edit]

Hey there EVula. I noticed a lot of date pages have !voting in them, such as January 1 (and every other month and date). I was wondering how exactly you format your !vote. Does "1" mean you like it the most? Can you !vote with the same number in different sections? etc. I would really like to start participating in these sort of pages. Thanks, – RyanCross (talk) 05:44, 5 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Entertonement

[edit]

Hi there, I noticed you reprimanded Lillylibertine88 a few days back for putting in links to entertonement.com in several pages. I need to check if such a site is valid for EL inclusion in wikiquote, because someone else complained why I removed entertonement links from James Bond. I sort of followed your example, thinking it was spam or something. Please clarify it to both of us. Thanks. --Eaglestorm 14:17, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, for starters, we're not here to document every single website out there that might have something relevant to the article. However, I'd have serious reservations about linking to a massive bank of audio clips; there might be very real copyright violation issues happening there.
I've started a discussion thread at Wikiquote:Village pump#Entertonement. We can get some clarification on what we should do with these links. EVula // talk // // 16:20, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi-- I'm David Aronchick, CEO of Entertonement. We would love to chat further about this, we have many deals in place that make linking to our sound bites (or inclusion of players) completely free and legal. We've seen users submit to Wikiquotes before, and I want to be totally clear that we ONLY want to be good citizens here. If the community is ok with the links to our pages, we'd love to have it, and I'd be glad to work with whomever would like to work with us. Otherwise, no worries! 14:24, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Jim Carrey

[edit]

I noticed there was a prior deletion discussion on this: Wikiquote:Votes for deletion/Jim Carrey - but I re-created the page from scratch and everything is sourced - I just wanted to doublecheck that that is okay? Cirt (talk) 07:44, 10 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely; none of the reasons that prompted the article's deletion are still relevant. I'd even be willing to provide you with a copy of the deleted article if you'd like to try to find sources for the unsourced quotes. EVula // talk // // 07:57, 10 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Recent changes top ideas

I think some of the top stuff here could be helpful to have for our Special:RecentChanges top as well. Obama update

[edit]

I noticed you beat me slightly in updating the Barack Obama page, — I actually had to log out and log back in before the update I had typed up was finally accepted, after making three previous attempts to post the intro I came up with last night, beginning from the moment he completed the oath. I am listening to the Inaugural speech right now. ~ Kalki 17:14, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I jumped the gun a bit; I heard the commentator downstairs say that he officially had the office at 12, regardless of not actually being sworn in yet, so I started making the edits. I also updated the Wikisource and Commons pages (same with Biden and, where relevant, W and Cheney). I tried to be at least somewhat neutral, but wasn't particularly good at it.[4][5] :)
On the downside, I missed the actual swearing in, but did jump downstairs to catch all but the first minute of his speech. EVula // talk // // 17:32, 20 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

...all electronic games? You'd be better off going to Wikipedia to figure that one out, as it would be an absolutely massive list. Even then, not all of the games could have decent Wikiquote entries (Superman 64 comes to mind). EVula // talk // // 16:05, 21 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actual dialogue back and forth would count as a single "quote." If you're tired of pages with no memorable quotes, you should replace them with ones that are. EVula // talk // // 00:20, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Matt Sanchez

[edit]

I don't know who you are and I didn't post "everywhere", I'm just trying to maintain the standards of Wikiquote, which have been clearly violated by one of the editors. I am new here and I'd appreciate the respect of someone who is acting out of sincerity and not malice. My intent was not to annoy you, I don't even know you. If you feel you can help, please do.Bluemarine 20:22, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

You posted in no less than four different places.[6][7][8][9] That is, obviously, not everywhere, but still, it's excessive.
At any rate, if you follow the thread at Wikiquote:Administrators' noticeboard#Matt Sanchez, you'll see that I'm inclined to agree with your assessment of the situation. EVula // talk // // 20:26, 25 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
He's hardly "new" here since he's been contributing to Wikiquote since May, 2007 under his username and many other contribs under various IP socks. - ALLSTRecho wuz here @ 02:57, 26 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

This is really unacceptable. One would actually admit it's a damn good quote because it puts Sanchez in a good light, something he keeps striving for with the constant whitewashing: It shows he owns up to his own mistakes and said it was the worst time of his life. To call it "lame" and un-related is short-sighted on your part. And of course we shan't forget that you aren't a neutral, uninvolved person in this matter. If I recall correctly, when he was banned from Wikipedia, you were one his biggest cheerleaders. Should one be surprised that you're taking sides in this matter on Wikiquote? I think not. - ALLSTRecho wuz here @ 01:13, 27 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

The last thing you should do is say that I'm not neutral; that's truly beyond the pot calling the kettle black. Question about VFD page

[edit]

I'm wondering if I've done something wrong (I followed the instructions as per the page) in my VfD nominations. I noticed the changes you made to the VfD subpage for Warhammer are not appearing at Wikiquote:Votes_for_deletion where the templates should make them show up. I'm not sure what's happened.... Any help would be appreciated, Peace and Passion ("I'm listening....") 05:58, 6 August 2009 (UTC).Reply

It's showing up, there's just a delay sometimes between when a page is changed and when its transclusions are updated. If you purge a page (add "?action=purge" to the end of the URL), it'll force it to update... though an easier method is to enable the UTC clock gadget; then all you have to do is click on the time and it'll purge the page. EVula // talk // // 06:01, 6 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Position of cleanup templates

[edit]

I don't have a problem with your moving this, but I usually follow the recommended order of cleanup templates, which places them below the intro. I only put them at the top when the intro is so long that they would otherwise fall below the fold. It is kinda funky how they collide with images—another case of WikiMedia fumbling the "float" attribute. ~ Ningauble 17:34, 7 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, I'd never seen that page before; I guess I'm used to Wikipedia, where such tags are always above everything. It was the image collision that prompted me to move the template in the first place... EVula // talk // // 21:10, 7 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Userrights

[edit]

Hey EVula. I just tried to blank a talk page that hand some random gibberish on it, and had my autoconfirmed status revoked. I assume this is because I triggered something in the abuse filter. Would it be possible to add me to the usergroup "Confirmed users", or somehow re-grant me my autoconfirmed status via the abusefilter (I know that feature is enabled on en.wiki). Thank you, Tiptoety 05:43, 6 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have no clue why your right would be revoked; may sound silly, but are you sure you had it to begin with? I'm actually not entirely sure what our threshold for autoconfirmed status is; with only eight edits, perhaps you don't meet the imaginary limit. My gut says it might be just 10 edits, but I have no idea why that number sprung to mind.
However, as to manually granting you the right, there are only four flags I can assign as a 'crat here: bot, admin, 'crat, and IP block exempt. Sorry. :( EVula // talk // // 05:51, 6 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, I know the abusefilter has the ability to revoke user's autoconfirmed status, as do admins now via the abusefilter interface (I have done it a few times). Basically, the message I got was "Warning: This action has been automatically identified as harmful. Unconstructive edits will be quickly reverted, and egregious or repeated unconstructive editing will result in your account or computer being blocked. If you believe this edit to be constructive, you may click Submit again to confirm it. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: Page blanking" (I clicked submit again, but it gave me the same message). After that, I was no longer able to edit pages I was able to do before. That said, if there is nothing you can do, than there is nothing you can do. I guess I will just have to write a few articles pages. Thanks, Tiptoety talk 06:03, 6 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikiquote interlanguage communication

[edit]

Hi, I'm Nemo from the Italian language Wikiquote and I'm writing you (via a bot) because you're an administrator of Wikiquote in this language; please excuse me if you've received this message more than once.
The simple thing that I want you to know is that Wikiquote has an official mailing list, Wikiquote-l, which can be used to communicate and discuss matters which interest all Wikiquotes. This mailing list was last "advertised" about three or four years ago, before many of us joined Wikiquote, and is currently almost not participated at all by Wikiquote users and very low-traffic. I ask you to subscribe, to participate in discussions and to write about your Wikiquote.
I love Wikiquote, as you probably do, and I think that we should be proud of what we do here, share our experiences and good practices to make Wikiquote better and raise awareness of it.
I remind you that Meta-Wiki is the best place for Wikimedia projects coordination, and it contains several pages about Wikiquote, and specifically this talk page which can be used to discuss about Wikiquote if you don't like mailing lists.
I hope that this message has been useful for you. Cheers, Nemo (write me) 10:11, 14 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Renaming, கலை to Kalaiarasy

[edit]

Mainly, I'm a Tamil wiki contributor and I created the account with a username in Tamil. I had problem in using the Soxred tool 'cos of this Tamil name. Besides, I felt that it would be nice to have my username in English (that everyone can read), and thus asked for renaming in ta.wiki. My username was then changed from my old username கலை to my new username Kalaiarasy (that is my first name) in ta.wiki.
Even after the renaming, I faced a few problems and have been advised to change the name in all wikis which I'm linked to. So, I made a request in Wikimedia, Meta-wiki at Steward requests page. They helped me changing my name in wikis which don't have the local bureaucrats and asked me get the renaming locally in wikis which have the local bureaucrats. So, I'm making the requests in those wikis and the local bureaucrats complete the renaming procedure. I asked user:Ahaia a few days ago. As I haven't get any response, I'm asking you now.
When I changed my old username கலை to my new username Kalaiarasy in my home wiki (that is ta.wiki), it autocreated the new account Kalairasy in some other wikis, including en.wikiquote too. You can see this here. I just want to confirm that both usernames are mine, and I now logged in as 'Kalaiarasy'. But I need the official renaming from கலை to Kalaiarasy. So please do the renaming in en.wikiquote and that would help me in a few things. If it's changed officially only, then I can merge the en:wikiquote too into my SUL as Kalaiarasy. See the links below too and you will find that both user names belong to me.

I wrote a message about my renaming in both my user pages. I wrote this in English as to inform all other wiki projects.

See these two pages in en:wikiquote too.

Please protect Dragon Ball and Sopranos Season articles from edit by new users

[edit]

Hello; I have maintained numerous articles on the wiki in the past; there is however an ongoing dilemma with this sockpuppeteer who keeps vandalizing the following articles amongst a few others: Sopranos seasons 1-6 and Dragon ball z seasons 1-9, as well as the Dragon Ball movies and all. Please protect them from edit by new users as almost all the usernames that have vandalized the articles are likely the same person. Also, this chaotic user has been following me and hounding me by either vandalizing all my previous contributions and/or impersonating me in some way or form. I am, quite frankly, tired of this behavior. If there's a way to protect my user talk page on wikipedia also, please do so as I'd greatly appreciate it. I have the same user name on wikipedia and its the only user name I go by. Thanks in advance. - Zarbon (talk) 00:13, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Also, on another note, once all the aforementioned articles are protected, I suggest looking at my user page to protect any articles there as well as the same vandal attempts to run down my list in order to vandalize any of my contributions. I'd also suggest a checkuser on the following recent names as they all seem to be more of his slew of puppets: Tony Soprano, Dodoria is here, Potato-Man67, and Cooper78. - Zarbon (talk) 00:25, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I've been catching all the puppets; I've been getting very liberal with CheckUser. I just protected your enwiki talk page for a couple of weeks; I loathe protecting talk pages, but if I have to extend the protection, I will. Your local talk page is semi-protected as well.
As far as protecting the local pages, I've considered it, and probably will soon. Not right now, though, since I need to actually get work done. Bah, stupid Real Life. EVula // talk // // 14:48, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I don't want to bother you at all since I myself have to deal with this kind of nonsense almost all the time on the DB wikia, for which I'm currently an admin, but this same user has been doing this for quite some time now; I believe since as early as 2002 (on all the wiki networks). If need be, we'll need to maintain some form of limited protection; new users from editing since almost all the time, the vandal will just create new user names only to vandalize and not much more than that. But since members with trustworthy accounts, such as those with a long-running activity basis, won't have to worry about edit conflicts, all should be well. Wikiquote is one of my favorite resources of the wikimedia related branches, so I'd like to keep it a nice and clean encyclopedic resource. Notify me if there's anything I can do to help; if anything does go awry with the articles, I'll just make sure to let you know in the future in case we need to protect, etc. - Zarbon (talk) 16:25, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Category:Trucks

[edit]

Hello EVula, The Category:Trucks in the pages ; Duel, Ice Road Truckers, Jimmy Hoffa and Smokey and the Bandit based to category wikipedia ; w:Category:Trucker films is delete infos to User:Ningauble is it the category for w:Portal:Trucks to wikipedia. please recreate category, thank you very much. FrankyLeRoutier (talk) 16:28, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

We don't need to go into as great a detail with our film categories as Wikipedia does, and while "Trucker films" (not "Trucks") would be applicable for Duel and Smokey and the Bandit, it wouldn't be relevant to Jimmy Hoffa (who is a person) or Ice Road Truckers (which is a TV show, not a film). Category:Trucks is just not a category that we need. EVula // talk // // 16:36, 11 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Forced user renames coming soon for SUL

[edit]

Hi, sorry for writing in English. I'm writing to ask you, as a bureaucrat of this wiki, to translate and review the notification that will be sent to all users, also on this wiki, who will be forced to change their user name on May 27 and will probably need your help with renames. You may also want to help with the pages m:Rename practices and m:Global rename policy. Thank you, Nemo 13:07, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Suspension of your CheckUser rights

[edit]

Hello EVula. Pursuant CheckUser policy and after the removal of Aphaia's CU tools due to inactivity, and given that after that removal you will be the one single CU for this project (which CU policy prohibits), I have suspended your CU tools on this project until the community decides whether to appoint or not another CheckUser. Your CU status will be restored afterwards, should the community wants to appoint another CU for this project. Best regards. MarcoAurelio (talk) 13:12, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Beast Wars

[edit]

The Beast Wars page under Dialogue[15] is becoming to long, there's too much dialogue. IP address user 2.124.157.173[16] shows no signs of stopping. Isn't there some kind of rule of putting too much on these pages here? 68.75.17.95 14:50, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yikes, that's way too much content everywhere. It should be broken down by episode, not by character; we'd be better off scrapping everything and putting up just an episode list so that future additions can be properly categorized. EVula // talk // // 17:06, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Beast Wars‎

[edit]

Might as well delete the page, if you're going to remove all quotes? ~ DanielTom (talk) 13:56, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

(Not that I want you to delete the page: we have many articles where quotes are organized by character, rather than by episode, but those require cleanup, not deletion.) ~ DanielTom (talk) 14:00, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
If nobody adds anything, possibly, but there's an IP editor that clearly is passionate about the show; ideally, he'll now contribute to the article within the correct structure. (also: episode titles aren't supposed to be italicized, but put in quotes; I didn't format them like that because it looked ugly, but I don't really care enough to change the formatting) EVula // talk // // 14:04, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think the move to delete the quotes was correct - there were just too many to try to figure out what episode they belonged to. I've done some additional formatting and added quotes for the first episode to get it started. I've also added some links (including the tv.com one) that could help someone who is interested in the show to start adding more quotes, sourced by episode. ~ UDScott (talk) 14:06, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
You also moved the article to the correct name, which I'm kicking myself for not having done already. :) EVula // talk // // 14:08, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just to address your formatting comment above, EVula: actually having italicized episode titles does match the format from the template for TV show pages. ~ UDScott (talk) 14:09, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
It does? Huh, learn something new every day. Definitely a difference between Wikipedia's MOS and ours. EVula // talk // // 14:21, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate the point of adding a list of episodes to emphasize that quotes need to be sourced and organized by episode; however, it has long been my custom to remove empty section headings. Now that the article does exemplify at least one episode with quotes, can we dispense with the placeholders? ~ Ningauble (talk) 16:12, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'd say let's let it stay like that for a few days; it's already started to be fleshed out properly, and keeping that skeleton of headers in place might be a contributing factor. EVula // talk // // 01:57, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I note also that there is a page for Ms Tartt's first novel, 'The secret history', which begins with "It has been suggested that this article or section be merged into Donna Tartt" which seems to me consistent with most Wikiquote entries. - Jbostock (talk) 07:32, 21 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

An important message about renaming users

[edit]

Dear EVula,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Category:Japanese poets

[edit]

Risto hot sir has requested that I ask the community about what should be done regarding the numerous articles listed under Category:Japanese poets. You will know what I mean after you read a few and start to see the trend. They are all a possible copyright violation, they are all of non-notable people who don't even have a Wikipedia article, they are all from one source and they all clog up this category. Request for comment on User:MonsterHunter32's massive censorship of sourced quotes without discussion

[edit]

I am asking the community to comment about the censorship of this user that I have already alerted about here Talk:India#Censorship_of_sourced_quotes_by_User:MonsterHunter32 and at other places, but it didn't help. What should be done about the continued massive removal of sourced quotes by MonsterHunter32 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · edit filter log · block user · block log) when he refuses to even move the quotes to the talkpage with full reasoning for each quote as was asked by multiple users many many times? You can read more about it at the link above, and at the other discussions linked in that discussion. Thank you. --Jedi3 (talk) 14:18, 24 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

The user User:Jedi3 keeps falsely blaming me of censorship and keeps edit-warring. He is only engaged in POV-pushing and adding statements just so they agree with his view. He doesn't care if his claims are made up like he did at Sikandar Butshikan, indirectly admitting to verbatim to verbatrim copying from Wikipedia before checking the source. He also added a quote at Muhammad bin Qasim that wasn't about the topic.

Or making up a false reason to remove a quote at Muslim conquest of the Indian subcontinent. Or he keeps making up his quotes eloquent, poignant, witty etc despite the "quotes" not even falling at all within the definition. He does this just to have his edits there at all costs. I've told him several times about this including here.

He falsely keeps saying I'm censoring him when all I've done is remove those quotes which aren't notable in any manner. Not those which are notable and i've preserved many of the quotes he has added. also removed the subsection of my complaint here. He himself censors me here and here in the past.

I've warned him several times including here, here and here. He doesn't listen and has removed my comments several times from his talk page.

Not to mention this person has also insulted me by terming me annoying after another user called me so, besides also calling me a vandal, when he himself can be indicted for edit-warring and vandalism. please block this user. I've been trying to cooperate with him, but it is clear he only wants his ideology imposed here. Their is no bar on any person of any ideology, even though Wikiquote is about neutrality but he doesn't care about anything and is being unprofessional.  and it is clear he doesn't care what he does to get his edits here at all costs.

Right after his block expired, Jedi3 is back at edit-warring before even waiting for a discussion and made 3 reverts at 3 articles. See his recent reverts, here, a sly attempt to befool others in edit summary at Aurangzeb of "article under construction", at Malabar rebellion. He proceeded to make additional subtractions and additions at Aurangzeb, even though a revert is a revert whether partial or complete. He is trying to fool others. And just after his block expired, he has started edit-warring again and made three reverts. I would first like to check all his quotes and then discuss them one by one.

I am discussing even right now all quotes one by one who Jedi3 says must not be removed, has is not cooperating. I have already complained him at Wikiquote:Administrators' noticeboard#Jedi3's disruptive behaviour, false claims and censorship. I ask you comment there and take action against him for his disruptive edits. Your advanced permissions on en.wikiquote

[edit]

Hello,

A policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus in 2013. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.

You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on this wiki. Since this wiki, to the best of our knowledge, does not have its own inactivity policy, the global one applies.

If you want to keep your advanced permissions, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. A community notice about this process has been also posted on the local Village Pump of this wiki. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at the m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights.

If you wish to resign your rights, please request removal of your rights on Meta.

If there is no response from you at all after one month, stewards will proceed to remove your administrator and/or bureaucrat rights. In ambiguous cases, stewards will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact the stewards.

Yours faithfully,
