James086 (talk · contribs) - James086, a user from Perth, Australia, has been with us since May 2006. Since then he has been an excellent contributor to many facets of Wikipedia, and I believe he has the experience necessary to be a capable administrator. He has over 5500 edits to his name, all well-distributed across the namespaces. He frequents WP:XFDs [1], [2], [3] and has even been bold enough to close AfDs for speedily deleted articles [4], [5], [6]. He also frequents WP:RFA and the help desk and is always constructive, polite and helpful.
James is well-known for stealing other people's reverts while on recent changes patrol. His reversions are always helpful and accurate, and I do not doubt that the admin rollback function would be very useful for such an avid recent changes patroller. He also has many reports to WP:AIAV, so it would be useful for him, and for us, to be able to block troublemakers instead of merely reporting them.
For those who adhere to the WP:1FA principle, I am pleased to announce that James fulfils this requirement, owing to his excellent rewrite of Maserati MC12, and his enthusiastic push for the article to reach the highest standards possible, pressing the article through peer review and FAC. Many believe that vandal fighters cannot be article writers, but I suppose James is the exception that proves the rule :) Here is a full list of his article contributions.
James is always polite, civil, humourous and friendly, even around vandals, which is a quality I greatly admire. He welcomes a great many new users, and always answers questions courteously.
As for the technical requirements, James has e-mail enabled, a clean block log (I believe he was once mistakenly blocked due to collateral damage), a short signature and a non-controversial (albeit very orange) userpage.
I have no doubt that James would continue his excellent work as a well-rounded Wikipedian even better, given admin privileges. His enthusiasm for the project and its well-being makes him an excellent candidate for addition to the janitorial squad. I submit James086 for your consideration, and give him my most whole-hearted support. riana_dzasta 03:53, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- I'm not a fan of co-noms, but as this will probably go live while I'm asleep, I should add it now. Riana has pretty much covered everything, in true Sarah Ewart style... basically, he's the ideal admin; works on articles: check; reverts vandalism: check; discusses XfDs: check; civil? always; edit count: doesn't matter much here, but check; nice userpage? yes, very welcoming and friendly. In all, I cannot think of any reason to not support this wonderful user. --Majorly (o rly?) 04:12, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Candidate, please indicate acceptance of the nomination here: I graciously accept. James086Talk 11:11, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Making such an in depth (and positive) statement must have taken some time and I thank you both for such a great nomination.
- Questions for the candidate
Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia in this capacity. Please take the time to answer a few generic questions to provide guidance for participants:
- 1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog and Category:Administrative backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.
- A: I would like to help out in several areas but with time I most likely will move on to others. Reducing the speedy backlogs would be a given and I'd start with simple deletions like {{db-author}} and {{db-attack}} though they are often empty. Given adminship I'd also be closing article for deletion debates. Naturally starting with non-contentious debates.
- Admin intervention is kept pretty empty (it's been on my watchlist for months) but whenever I see a (valid) report, being able to block would be great and not only that but being able to skip the reporting stage when RC Patrolling. I wouldn't be protecting pages except for temporary semi-protects where multiple anons are repeatedly attacking an article.
- Finally and strange as it might sound, I am interested in Special:Unwatchedpages which (I'm told) is full of either pages that are deletable or badly in need of cleanup. No really, I am interested.
- 2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?
- A: Yes, Maserati MC12. I rewrote it from [7]. Other than that I'm fairly proud of Ferrari P4/5, lots of research with really not that much info. But in the end all the time spent scouring the net were worth it. You can see a bunch of my notable contributions at James086/portfolio.
- Why? Due to the effort I put into these articles. I spent a long time researching both the Ferrari and the Maserati articles, I asked the photographer (successfully) for Image:Maserati MC12 Corsa.jpg (a cropped version is in the article) and put hours of effort into the articles. I think those hours were worth it, which is one of the reasons I continue to edit Wikipedia.
- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- A: Do edit conflicts count?
- But seriously, I've never been engaged in a conflict on Wikipedia. Any content dispute was sorted out on the talk page of the respective article. I think assuming good faith is very important and when a significant contribution is made it is very unlikely that it was a bad faith edit, despite what the actual content may be.
- I don't get stressed, (except for during exams) so nothing on Wikipedia has been enough to make me sweat it. I have had my share of feedback from those I have reverted and my userpage has been vandalised 71 times.
- If I were pressured in the future I think Wikipedia has some very useful ways of dealing with disagreements; third opinion, requests for comment, mediation and if it becomes really bad arbcom. I think however I'm quite good at keeping my cool and I doubt any dispute could push me past RfC. I find that most people are quite open to a compromise if you respect their opinion and approach the situation with an open mind.
- 4. You've been here for months, made thousands of edits, and devoted hundreds of hours to Wikipedia without pay or and tangible reward. Above you said why you wanted to be an admin, but why do you want to be a Wikipedian? What was your motivation for joining, and for staying?
- A: Simply put: I enjoy it. The reason why I enjoy it so much is tricky. Really there are several reasons (and probably more that I can't think of at the moment). Every time I visit I learn something new (like DYK on the main page). When tackling vandalism, I see articles that interest me and quite often I get distracted from the reverting. The content of Wikipedia is interesting, and one thing that keeps me editing.
- When I rewrote Maserati MC12 (my first edit to that article) it was a sense of achievement. Nobody had acknowledged it (probably no-one had seen it) at that point, and it wouldn't have been given GA status, but it felt good to have improved it. That sense of achievement returned when it was listed as a GA, an A-Class article by Wikiproject Automobiles and then again as FA. I like the idea of Wikipedia, it did sound a bit ridiculous that there would be a website that anyone can change when I first found out about it, but I was convinced it was possible and now here I am. One of the reasons I revert vandalism is because people abuse the trust that the foundation has given them.
- I don't know why I joined, I signed up in May though forgot about it. In late July I returned and got hooked. Wikipedia is dangerously addictive, and I'm afraid that one day (though I hope it never comes) I may need forced rehab. Really I'm not 100% sure why I like it so much, but I do and that's what keeps me here.
- General comments
- See James086's edit summary usage with mathbot's tool. For the edit count, see the talk page.
- I think Category:Administrators open to recall is a great idea and if successful would add myself.
- The incident Riana was referring to was on August 19, 2006 when an autoblock error stopped a number of people editing. I asked Sango123 about it (she blocked us) and it seems everyone affected was unblocked. The event isn't logged as me being blocked though. See also my diffs on her talk page: [8][9]
- Over the past few days my contributions have been a bit skewed (lots of monobook.js changes) as I was unable to preview my edits. It's sorted now and I'm back to normal.
Please keep criticism constructive and polite.

- Support — looks like a great user. I'm a little concerned that the activity has been declining over the last two months, but it's not in a range anywhere near enough for me to say you're burned out. — Deckiller 14:01, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Probably due to concentrating on the FA, instead of vandal fighting, which would rack up a lot less edits. I'm just guessing, though. riana_dzasta 14:11, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Yeah, there's no problem whatsoever. The only time I ever get concerned with edit count on RfA is when people have very low totals, or have seen a 900 percent decrease in activity. I'm glad this user is spending time on featured articles; the best admins are those who can see both sides (admin actions and editor actions). — Deckiller 14:20, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

- Support. Riana has clearly been working on her barker technique, I was minded to add {{advert}} to this RFA. Enough bad jokes: a really impressive candidate. There have been times I've wondered if there are two James086's as his name pops up that often. He has a wide range of experience, on both sides of the curtain. What's not to like?
