Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Steve Parlanti. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:Spam);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 18:39, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Self-published source

[edit]

In addition to the conflict of interest issue raised above, there is a problem with several of your edits to existing articles. You have added several citations of http://parlantibronzefoundries.co.uk/; this is a self-published website, and as such it is not a reliable source for Wikipedia. Moreover, it appears that you are the author of that website. You are not supposed to add unsourced material to Wikipedia, and adding material that is only sourced to your own website is no better.

Is the content of the website based on unpublished records? If it is from reliable published sources then please cite these.

A few of your edits appear inappropriate or misplaced, including this edit. I plan to check your recent edits when I have time.

I hope that you can create an acceptable article on the Parlanti Foundry. This will need independent reliable sources. A quick Google search found these:

Hi. Sorry, I'm just understanding the procedure. In the next few days I will replace all the current citations for parlantibronzefoundries.co.uk with more reliable ones,mainly newspaper citations. Please allow me a few days,thanks. Steve Parlanti (talk) 20:47, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have had a bash at fleshing out the Parlanti foundry draft and adding some of the sources identified by Verbcatcher. In my view, notability has been established and it is now reliably sourced, though there are still some loose ends that need verifying. Paul W (talk) 10:16, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm KAP03. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Thomas Brock, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. -KAP03 (Talk • Contributions • Email) 21:19, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@KAP03:, the edit you reverted was sourced to 'West London Observer March 15th 1901 p7', which was a newspaper published in London, see List of newspapers in London. Why is this an unreliable source? Sources are not required to be available online. Verbcatcher (talk) 10:05, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't think

[edit]

that editing wikipedia is like running a gauntlet, in which all the editors line up on both sides of you and take turns hitting you with their best shots. If you hang in here that will go away. Given your subject I was going to suggest that you change your user name and it is still not too late. Looking at the content that you've been adding it is very much something that I'd like to see more of. Please feel free to check in with me before reposting you new article, I have some experience that might help you avoid the gauntlet, Carptrash (talk) 22:07, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have found a couple of Parlanti references in my books (being an American in the USA I don't have a lot of British stuff, but some) that I would be glad to toss in if you have your atricle in a sandbox somewhere. Also if you have access to the original Parlanti documents you can post them somewhere and then use that as references. Carptrash (talk) 05:04, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks,but I won't bother. All the information online, including the NPG database and Mapping Sculpture database, were compiled from MY original research. I am the main authority and go to for information on the foundries. These includes being able to correct any current wrong information on Wikipedia. Steve Parlanti (talk) 08:18, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, in my view you don't have a significant conflict of interest in relation to the Parlanti Foundry, as it ceased operation in 1917 and your family connection appears to be sufficiently remote. However, you do have an apparent conflict of interest with the website parlantibronzefoundries.co.uk, and any edits that could be interpreted as being intended to drive readers to it are likely to be reverted. The same applies to the book 'The Parlantis: Art Bronze Founders of Fulham' (ISBN 978-1848764613).
You appear to be a significant expert on this subject, this is indicated by your website being cited by reliable sources including 'Mapping the Practice and Profession of Sculpture in Britain and Ireland 1851-1951' (University of Glasgow)[1]. This does not automatically make your website a reliable source, but other editors may cite it with caution (see Wikipedia:Identifying and using self-published works#Using self-published sources).
Please don't be confused if you receive conflicting advice. As with most things on Wikipedia, advice from other editors (including me) is not totally reliable, although it is usually well-intentioned. Please don't be put off, and continue to contribute to Wikipedia. Regards, Verbcatcher (talk) 10:45, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have found (so far) five monument articles already in wikipedia that mention Parlanti as the founder. National War Memorial (Newfoundland), Royal Air Force Memorial, National Submarine War Memorial, York and Lancaster Memorial, Sheffield and Onslow Whiting. They are now all red linked. if the links were changed to reflect the name of the article you are working on, when it gets published there will automatically be four articles linking to it, one of the ways an article gains respectability. Also, if you put something, anything, on your user page then your user name will change into a blue link rather than being the red one that it is now. The blue link, as opposed to the red link, suggests to others, or at least to me, that you are not the dead end that red links on wikipedia indicates and that perhaps you are even a serious editor who intends to stay around. The "talk" tab at the top left of this page will change color too after my posting, because now there is something there. Consider it, Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 16:21, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
