The article Susan Montgomery has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This looks like a case of shameless (self) promotion. Hey, look at me: I teach math and I want my CV on Wikipedia.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. johncheverly 21:22, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Georgia Benkart

[edit]

Hi, I'm Larksky12358. Mvitulli, thanks for creating Georgia Benkart!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Most of the sources, I notice, were written by Benkart herself, which is a primary source. Most sources need to be secondary, or not written by her. Other than that, the article looks good.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. ❀Larksky1235821:43, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Georgia Benkart page improvements

[edit]

Thanks for the comment Larksky12358. I changed some of the primary sources you mentioned. Now 3 out of 15 citations are to primary sources. These primary sources are to major works written by Benkart. I think the secondary sources criterion is satisfied. I am removing the primary source tag. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for letting me know. ❀Larksky1235819:03, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Mara Neusel, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Fixed point. Arxiv article and a comment

[edit]

Hi! I enjoyed reading your article posted on Arxiv (1710.11103). Yeah, Wikipedia sometimes can be unforgiving, but there are some reasons why we do things in certain ways, like preferring secondary sources over primary sources for instance. I also looked at several Wikipedia articles mentioned in that articles, and I see that two of them need {{maths rating}} templates, so I added them to talk pages for Susan Montgomery and Mei-Chu Chang. Keep that in mind as you continue creating articles about female mathematicians. I am trying to find and tag many math articles with that template. Happy editing! --TheBlueWizard (talk) 04:04, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecturer

[edit]

Hello Mvitulli,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecturer for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source, probably infringing copyright.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Information icon Hi Mvitulli! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor at AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecturer that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Thanks Kj cheetham. I will take a look at the help on minor edit.

Kristin Umland article mentions Bill Gross in error?

[edit]

I am writing this message because you were the original author of the article, which stated that "After being invited to visit the Vermont Mathematics Initiative by Bill Gross..." The Bill Gross link was marked as needing disambiguation. In an attempt to resolve the disambiguation issue, I googled Umland and Vermont Mathematics. I noticed Dr. Ken Gross might have been the person who invited her. I also couldn't find any mention in the references for this, so there wasn't any help there. Please let me know if I am correct that it was Ken Gross and not Bill Gross. IdRatherBeAtTheBeach (talk) 23:13, 20 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note User:IdRatherBeAtTheBeach. I think you are correct, it should be Ken Gross rather than Bill Gross. I don't remember where I saw Bill Gross invited her. Thanks for correcting this. Mvitulli (talk) 00:31, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You are marking most of your edits as minor

[edit]

I am very happy to see a knowledgeable mathematician working here on women's articles. But please don't mark so many of your changes as "minor". Minor edit has a very specific meaning here to allow editors to quickly monitor recent changes; see Help:Minor edit. Very few of your edits are minor in this sense. Thanks. StarryGrandma (talk) 22:55, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks StarryGrandma. I thought I was doing better on this. Mvitulli (talk) 22:56, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
When you edit is the "minor edit" box already checked and you have to uncheck it, or is it the other way around? StarryGrandma (talk) 23:15, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It is the other way around. No box is checked when you edit. I guess some things I view as minor edits, other would not view this way. I don't see some edits as changing the meaning of an article. In any case, I will try to be more careful. Mvitulli (talk) 23:22, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for answering. I've sometimes thought it gets stuck to being permanently checked for some editors. Years ago editors could set it that way in Preferences, and when the option was first taken out of Preferences they forgot to give a way for users to turn it off. Commons VRT

[edit]

Moving the discussion about getting pictures on commons here, since it is only secondarily connected with Georgia Benkart. I don't have so much experience with commons, but it's my impression that they are very suspicious of photos that look like press photos being uploaded. I _think_ that the procedure now is that the photographer emails VRT and says that she's the photographer. They might ask for some confirmation (which should be pretty easy to give. Was a credit given in the Notices article? That, plus an email from an institutional email, might be pretty convincing.) I also _think_ that as soon as the photographer contacts VRT, you can post something to the commons Noticeboard that the administrator over there linked. It shouldn't be too big of a deal from that point -- you just need to get over the suspicion of press photos. I agree that the photo I added is vastly inferior (but I thought it was better than nothing.)

I appreciate your good work on mathematician bios on here! Russ Woodroofe (talk) 16:32, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Russ. Yes, credit to Yvonne Nagel was given in the Notices article; see the end of the article. The problem is there are some lines in the html code (633-636) that indicate the the regents of u wisconsin hold the copyright to the in memoriam page and the photo isn't excluded from the copyright. David Eppstein pointed this out and I looked at the html code. I contacted the webmaster and someone I know in the math dept in madison and I hope they will alter the html code to exclude the photo. We shall see. AWM has photos of Georgia from when she was president and they own those photos. If all else fails I get get someone at AWM or the original photographer to upload one of those photos. Mvitulli (talk) 16:50, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm assuming that the photographer is this person [2]. Since she's retired, I think it's a bit unlikely that the photo could be a work for hire (depending I suppose a little on when it was taken). So unless she explicitly released the photo to them, she probably holds the copyright, no matter what the regents of wisconsin may claim. Asking for appropriate credit to be added to the page could still be worthwhile. Russ Woodroofe (talk) 17:24, 7 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The webmaster at the math department at Wisconsin gave Yvonne Nagel credit for the photo. Do you think Yvonne can contact VRT now or should we wait until someone addresses the copyright in the html code issue? That won't happen until Monday at the earliest.
