oi, sorry about that please Re-edit you prempted me so I put the older version wikified. GrazingshipIV 18:07, Apr 7, 2004 (UTC)

Hi. What work of fiction does Fyksland come from, I wonder? Morwen 18:20, Apr 7, 2004 (UTC)

- Hi. Yes it's a fictional country I've developed over the years with a constructed language. The language has been linked from the "Toki Pasiki" in the toki pona wikipedia page, so I figure I should write an entry for Fyksland and Fyksian. Just starting now. --Kvasir 18:49, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Right, well thanks for acknowledging that. You'll note I've listed it on Votes for Deletion. Wikipedia does have articles about fictional things, but this tends to be in a factual way, and we tend to try to discourage people writing their own original fiction here. Morwen 18:52, Apr 7, 2004 (UTC)
Ah ok, sorry about the spam then. Just read the article on fiction and will move the content to wikifiction asap. --Kvasir 19:05, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for being so reasonable about this. You wouldn't believe the trouble we get [sometimes people insist their palpably fictional things are actually real]! Morwen 19:09, Apr 7, 2004 (UTC)

Actually, since you know something about it, could I get your opinion on whether Toki Pona language should have an article? It's only three years old... so I'm wondering if it's a notable conlang or just someone promoting their work here. Isomorphic 19:13, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I'm the last person to be asked when it comes to wikipedia policy. I don't know what the policy is for conlang. There are a few conlang projects on wikipedia already. --Kvasir 19:26, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hey, Ksavir, don't you want to vote to save your article at VfD? Wiwaxia 13:00, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)

WOW looks like there are interest out there to keep Fyksland alive, at least in the Wikipedia world. What I don't get is why is this back on VfD after 1 or 2 weeks. --Kvasir 19:24, 1 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you about poppy seed article

[edit]

Dear colleague, I bought poppy seed in an erboristeria in Italy in that store they showed me a book about herbs, the seeds used for food preparation come from papaevero rosolacio not papaver somniferum. It is smaller, even the seeds are slightly smaller. This confusion makes illegal by ignorance the trade of poppy seed in some countries. In Europe is very commnon to eat bread with poppy seed, cakes and other meals. If they were made of papaver somniferum seeds, then the gangsters trading with drugs would not have to bring it from countries like Afghanistan, don't you think so? However I do not have a good reference book, to correct the poppy seed article. May be a good book about herbs and it's uses is available in your country and you can help to correct this entry. I look for information in internet but I did not find something that looks well documented. If I can find something of the quality I saw in that book in Italy (de la Riva was the author as far as I remember) I will fix the article ofcourse. Thanks for your enthusiastic collaboration in wikipedia —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.140.235.120 (talk) 17:40, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Portugal

[edit]

I didnt delete your info, it was changed to Portuguese Empire were it should be. Angola, Mozambique etc. were made has part of Portugal during Salazar's regime. Portugal do Minho a Timor (Portugal from the Minho Region to East Timor). Are you sure that list is the complete Portuguese Empire? -Pedro 13:44, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This list is from info i gathered from the World Statesmen site, there could be more that should be on the list. An independent check needs to be made. Where possible i usually checked with related wikipedia articles in terms of dates and status. Where wikipedia lack info i could only go by what world statesmen says. --Kvasir 13:48, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry for not explaining. I wouldnt delete all that useful and correct info!!! that would be vandalism. But it was clearly missplaced. -Pedro 14:03, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. But yeah that was my initial impression heh. Didn't know there was a Portuguese Empire article when i added the stuff and couldn't find a good place for it. It is in a more suitable home now. --Kvasir 14:09, 23 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fyksland as been deleted!

[edit]

Sorry, I've done my best. Anyway, it temporarily moved its contents to http://conlang.wikicities.com/wiki/Fyksland . Just to let you know. Best, IJzeren Jan 14:17, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your interest and support. I'll try to add more content there though. I've always been afraid to add stuff on the wiki article in fear that people would put it back on VfD again. But seems like this time it was a non-issue. When was this decided anyway? --Kvasir 22:42, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Three days ago. Look here. Note that this VFD came as part of a whole series of conlang VFDs (apart from Fyksland, against Aingeljã, Brithenig, Breathanach, Verdurian, DiLingo and my own Wenedyk. Look at the various discussions, they are pretty interesting. Anyway, Fyksland, Breathanach, Aingeljã and DiLingo didn't make it. Especially interesting is the way the votes were counted: in the case of Fyksland it was 14 for Delete and 11 for Keep. But four of the keepers were discounted for IMO doubtful reasons, thus giving 14D/7F, the lowest possible margin for "rough consensus" and therefore deletion. Note that all Aingeljã, DiLingo and Breathanach are currently on Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion. Frankly I think Fyksland should be in there, too. The reason I haven't put it there yet is that I managed (only fifteen minutes before the articles was deleted, imagine) to copy its content to the Conlang Wiki. --IJzeren Jan 07:14, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I just issued an undeletion request: Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion#Fyksland. --IJzeren Jan 08:33, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your interests in Fyksland-related article on Wikipedia in the past. Some Fyksland articles can now be accessed from my user page as work in progress upon completion could be moved to similar wiki for conlangs. --Kvasir 09:10, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

五, 伍 etc.

[edit]

Hello, I was wondering what source you saw that says 五 is pronounced as [m̩] and not [ŋ̩] ? It seems to me that most if not all of the dictionaries out there say that both are pronounced as [ŋ̩]. -- KittySaturn 23:12, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think that *I* am part of the great phonologic shift happening in HK and overseas Cantonese speakers. Many Hong Kongers make no distinction between 五 and 唔 except in tone. I do, however, distinguish between 五/唔/伍 and 吳. See Standard Cantonese under Current Phonological Shift. I should put a note on the HK government Cantonese Romanization article. I think that particular 五分州 example is still relevant though since the article does deal with HK pronunciation. I believe some dictionaries do list both [m̩] and [ŋ̩] as possible pronuncations as well. www.cantonese.ca does show [m̩] as a pronunciation for 五. Unfortunately I have no access to a printed dictionary right now. --Kvasir 04:26, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know about the phonological shift, of course. I have seen many Cantonese dictionaries in Hong Kong since I grew up reading them all the time, and I haven't seen one that lists [m̩] as a pronunciation, though I wouldn't be surprised if a very small number of them do list it. Also, I have not heard people distinguishing between 五 and 吳; if someone says 五 as [m̩] they would also say 吳 as [m̩]. I say both as [ŋ̩] and only 唔 as [m̩].
As for the cantonese.ca site, I must say that one would not use it as a reference: I think it is a sloppy site. A year or two back, I had chatted online with the author of that site, and she herself is a foreign learner of Cantonese who imitates the few Cantonese-speaking friends she has around her. She told me that she wanted to learn Cantonese as young people speak it (I think it also says so on the site), but she seems to believe that, for example, all the "young people" pronounce 國 as gok3 (8) instead of gwok3 (8), which is definitely not true. Only a few of my friends say it as gok3, even though almost all of them say the sloppy 你 as lei5.
In any case, even if a source or two says so, I would say that [m̩] is not mentioned in most publications. At least in Hong Kong, dictionaries have not incorporated sound shifts in pronunciation guides: 你 is always nei5 (not lei5), 國 is always gwok3 (not gok3), 五 is always ng5 (not m5). -- KittySaturn 16:16, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you document the assertion you put on the HMS Pandora page? That numbered IP is not the only one who is skeptical. I am skeptical too. There are a bunch of explanations that sound plausible, but aren't true. POSH == Port Outbound Starboard Home. That "Cold enough to squeeze to balls off a brass monkey" has a nautical connection. This sounds like another plausible sounding explanation that can't be substantiated... -- Geo Swan 10:40, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Macau Separation barrier

[edit]

Hello,

I noticed you added the fact "340 metre border" to the Separation barrier article again. Are you absolutely sure that the border is only 340 metres long ? - 340 m seems extremly short. Travelbird 21:34, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See Geography of Macau which seems like it's extracted from the CIA world fact book under Land boundary. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/mc.html --Kvasir 23:41, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for providing the source. I'm still a bit sceptical, but since I can't find a better source, I'll leave the arcticle as it is for the time being. Travelbird 02:54, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest checking out maps with the scale provided. The northern front is no more than a few kilometres (at most 5) long anyway. Most of that distance are delimited by a body of water which may or may not have been reclaimed recently. --Kvasir 03:58, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

NICE PHOTOS!

Thankyou, whoever you are. :) --Kvasir 06:08, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I noticed that you reinstated some of the information into "Celine Dion." I have reverted it because I find the additional infomation superfluous. It would work well in an article about Air Canada and endorsements, but not in "Celine Dion." As a featured article, it needs to stay clear of unnecessary detail and unsourced generalities.

I also noticed that you italised a song title: you changed "You and I" to You and I. However, the former is the correct format, and on this note, I have also reverted this edit. Thanks for your contribution to the article. I urge you to continue. Orane (talkcont.) 02:41, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well it's unsourced because most of the mainstream news articles are now out of date given it's been 2 years since the event.
[1]
[2]
So there, it's sourced.
On the point of it being superfluous, I would have to say this controversy directly related to Dion herself. For the airline, it wasn't controversial because they had a celebrity endorsement but the fact that they chose Dion, whose appearance doesn't come particularly cheap. So yes, this has everything to do with her. Whether it's superfluous or not is strictly one's opinion. Let me remind you the paragraph was in the article at the time it was featured. That means that bit of information contributed to the fact that it was featured.
I also question why we are having this discussion here in my personal talk page instead of the article talk page. To limit others from participating I suppose? --Kvasir 03:02, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
First, I did not state that the controversy did not affect Celine Dion herself. I stated that it was unnecessarily explored in the article. There are many things that have affected Celine Dion in her life time, but that does not mean that they deserve to be placed in her biography. Yes, it may have been there at the point of promotion, but as you can see, the article has improved/changed much since that time, and I have realised that the point is simply "unnecessary detail" (which is against criterion number-four in the featured article clause).
Second. I raised the issue on your talk page because I thought it was appropriate. I use article talk pages when there are major issues with the article, with no clear indication as to who made the edits etc. In this case, I reverted some edits that you made, and I thought it would be polite to personally notify you. Nothing more. If you want to move our discussion to the talk page, then be my guest. But don't assume anything about my actions. Orane (talkcont.) 14:11, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please clarify or reword a Multiple citizenship edit

[edit]

It may be that I am especially dense today, but I can't figure out the final sentence of Example 8 in Multiple citizenship. The sentence reads "Controversially, this would have contradict his PRC citizenship.", and has survived unchanged since you added that example (then numbered Example 9) several revisions ago. -- Boracay Bill 03:36, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah yes, this would require an understanding of Political status of Taiwan. Also see Legal status of Taiwan. Basically, both PRC and ROC regards itself the only legitimate government of China legally speaking, and has claim to the WHOLE of China. But for almost 60yrs neither governments has acted formally towards separation or reunification. Perhaps you would like to include link on the Multiple citizenship article to clarify this. --Kvasir 04:03, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese kinship

[edit]

Hello. It is an honour to meet the person who created the "Chinese kinship" article. I have re-changed the information on the "Chinese kinship" article to its state before you edits. It seems that it is lacking maternal relations when it comes to extended family members (e.g. mother's mother's sister's daughter) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Daniel Hu (talkcontribs) 18:06, 12 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Thankyou for your interest in the subject. However, please do not indiscriminately revert all edits. The section are currently organised according to the western cousin chart as it is an English article. Grandnephews, nieces, uncles and aunts etc are beyond the 1st nine cells on the cousin chart and as such has been in the Larger extended family and terminology section. All these infomation were already in the article when 74.112.94.86 did his/her reorganisation. If you have other suggestions for the organisation of these terms, please address them in the Talk Page of the article. Thanks. --Kvasir 18:26, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese New Year discussion board

[edit]

You should be looking at what was deleted. It was too cluttered and disorganized. Some postings were dated back as old as 2005. Deleting postings that no longer invite response should be justified.Dat789 23:00, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Actually it is customary to archive old postings. See Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page. They provide reference and the reasons behind some of the improvements that were made. If they appear to be disorganised, go ahead and organise them and it's ok to reorder them. I have actually read some of the deleted postings, some were constructive criticism about the article and are still very much relevant. --Kvasir 23:38, 16 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As you the article have mentioned, '...provide reference...behind some of the improvements that were made'. Do you think asking help from fellow Wikipedians how to cook or inform him/her about Chinese cultures is helpful to the purpose of Wikipedia especially in this article of Chinese New Year? Some of those postings are not even relevant to the article at all, what more about being outdated. If you see Wikipedia:Talk_page_guidelines#How_to_use_article_talk_pages, you'll notice one or more items listed says stay objective, or deal with facts, keep on topic, etc. You'll get the drift. I've stated my points, but if you insist in reverting to the originals I will insist back. It is archived anyway in Wikipedia (in the History tab)!-- Dat789 10:19, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

If you’re interested in participating, please vote on when you’d like to schedule the meet. Thanks. —GrantNeufeld 21:59, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

please delete that sentence

[edit]

I think reference to the Berlin 1936 Games is quite important, I also think we should reference the Moscow 1980 Games. Because Nazi-Germany and Soviet-Russia were both oppressive and totalitarian regimes, just as Communist China. Furthermore we all know what happened in 1945 and 1989.

   * 1936 + 9 = 1945
   * 1980 + 9 = 1989
   * 2008 + 9 = 2017 (will be a year to remember)

I hope the 2016 games will be staged in Pyongyang or Teheran ;-)

Fyksland's financial sector

[edit]

Perhaps the wrong place for this comment? When the global financial markets began collapsing, my thoughts immediately turned to that "other" Nordic nation in the North Atlantic. I hope that they are successfully weathering whatever difficulties are befalling them. Fishal (talk) 20:06, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow what a pleasant surprise! A fan of Fyksland, and thanks for your concern! Such a shame I haven't been keeping Fyksian news alive for the last little while.
I regret to report that Fyksland has inevitably fallen victim to the collapsing global markets. Shipping, tourism sectors have suffered. The only saving grace is the petroleum and energy sector that managed to softened blow. Unfortunate with fluctuating oil prices even that outlook is less than certain. So far, other then the couple of interest rate adjustment, the government has so far had their hands off the economy. Fyksland has a sound banking system and an independent currency. This has prevented Fyksland being dragged into the mess that is the Eurozone. --Kvasir (talk) 21:19, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MfD nomination of Fyksland pages

[edit]

Several of your user pages have been nominated for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Fyksland pages and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes. You are free to edit the content of your user pages during the discussion but should not remove the miscellany for deletion template from the top of the page; such a removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. - Gump Stump (talk) 00:31, 21 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NowCommons: File:08012007 bellagio.jpg

[edit]

File:08012007 bellagio.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:The fountain of Bellagio.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:The fountain of Bellagio.jpg]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 11:01, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

MfD nomination of Fyksland pages

[edit]

Hello, I'm just replying to your comment on my talk page. I didn't single out your user pages out of malice; I gave my reasoning on the MfD deletion page. I'm sorry that you are apparently upset, but you should review WP:UP#NOT, and the comments of other users on the deletion page. - Gump Stump (talk) 06:44, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It has nothing to do with usage in the Sandbox though. --Kvasir (talk) 15:22, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this useful map. I am interested in a subset for the Treaty of Rarotonga zone, which would need to be broken on the opposite side of the world.

Might you be able to help me with this, or tell me what tools I could use? Thanks! --JWB (talk) 20:30, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting project. I created this map using one that already has the red marine borders on. All I did was colour it blue. You maybe able to find a base with the longitude and lattitude for your map. I'll see if I can remmeber where I found this base. There's a collection of them. --Kvasir (talk) 15:38, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 21:00, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited The Silk Road (NHK TV Series), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Travelogue. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
